Distance Learning

The term “distance learning” used to mean college, especially courses available via the Internet. We’ve used it here to encompass various types of educational programs open to homeschoolers. They include correspondence schools, “umbrella” schools, homeschooling guidance programs, and, yes, school programs that are accessed via the Internet. Most require enrollment, but some offer their materials to families who don’t feel the need for teacher support, records-keeping, or other services.

Some programs support unschooling, others provide a complete curriculum package. How much and what type of services your family needs to purchase is entirely up to you.

We recommend that you investigate several types of programs, and make notes on what you want, what you need, and what you just can’t deal with. Are deadlines imposed on students? How much flexibility is there in “grade level“? Exactly what does your payment include? Use those notes to help you choose a program that’s a good fit for your family.

Never settle for something that isn’t right for you! That wastes your money and time, and saps your energy. Keep looking. If you can’t find what you need, consider a do-it-yourself program.

NJ homeschoolers do not change their status upon enrolling in a private school’s home education program. We are still protected by NJ’s educational freedoms.

The programs listed below are comprehensive programs - they offer a "complete" curriculum, covering major subjects and offering various "electives".

NJHA does not endorse any of these programs. We offer this information as a service. Please investigate any program before sending them your hard-earned cash!
