William Miller was born in Nelson Township in 1834, the second son of George Miller, Pioneer carriage and wagon builder of Owen Sound.
Miller married Miss Jane Hardy on June 22, 1857 in Garafraxa, Ontario.
Miller moved to Owen Sound around 1863. He started in the carriage building business with his father but later became a sign and banner painter. He was regarded as a man of excellent artistic ability. Many of Owen Sound's older houses were decorated by his skillful hand. It has been said that had he followed up the purely artistic aspect of his occupation, he would undoubtedly have given to Canada some valuable art productions.
William Miller was a member of St. George's Masonic Lodge and an attendant of the First Methodist Church in Owen Sound.
After living in Owen Sound for over forty-five years, William Miller died at his residence on Union Street at the age of 74. He died of cancer of the stomach and liver. His death was not unexpected, as he had been in failing health for about seven months prior.
He was survived by his wife Jane, his one daugher Margaret Anne (Mrs. J.R. Brown) and his two sons, Messrs Harry and Charles Miller, both of whom reside in Owen Sound. His funeral was conducted with Masonic ceremonies, and among the pallbearers were several promenant people in Owen Sound: Messers. Jas. McLauchlan, Daniel McKenzie, Dr. Allan Cameron, Oliver C. Brown, John Keys and Dr. J.W. Marshall.

An old resident of Owen Sound passed away on Friday morning, 7th instant the person of Mr. William Miller, who died at his residence on Union street, aged 74 years. Mr. Miller had been in failing health for about a year and his death was not unexpected. He was born in Nelson, Ont., and had been a resident of Owen Sound for 45 years, a painter by profession. Over fifty years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Hardy, who survives him together with one daughter, Mrs. J.R. Brown, and two sons, Messrs Harry and Charles Miller, all of whom reside in Owen Sound. Deceased is also survived by two brothers and three sisters, Messrs. R.R. Miller and J.C. Miller, Owen Sound, Mrs. Rutherford and Mrs. McIntosh, Owen Sound, and Mrs. Horton, of Winnipeg. Deceased was a member of St. George's Masonic Lodge and an attendant of the Frist Methodist Church.
The funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon, was conducted with Masonic ceremonies, the members of the lodge meeting at their lodge room at one o'clock and attending in a body. The pallbearers were Messers. Jas. McLauchlan, Daniel McKenzie, Dr. Allan Cameron, Oliver C. Brown, John Keys and Dr. J.W. Marshall.
