Ayla is the cheif of Ioka village in the year 65,000,000BC. We find out at the end of the game that she is one of Marle's ancestor's.
The first time we meet Ayla is when Crono, Marle, and Lucca are trying to obtain part of a stone called the "Dream Stone" in order to repair the damaged Masamune. Though she helps with this event, she does not join the group yet.
After being sucked into the "gate" after the battle with Magus; Crono, Marle (or Lucca or Robo), and Frog end up in the prehistoric era (65,000,000BC). Two of the now five members of the group, team up with Ayla to help defeat Azala.
It is in this time, as we discover, exactly when it was that Lavos first appeared. Lavos is, or was depending on when you are, the cause of the destruction of the world in the year 1999. He fell from the heavens, from exactly where - no one knows.
Since Ayla was born before the age of magic - she can't really use it. That is why practically all of her "Tech" spells are physical oriented; although, she does have a couple spells that aren't physical.
