The first step in web design is to plan your site. A storyboard
can help you plot out your strategy, graphically speaking. Storyboards are used
in many production processes, including film, music videos, TV commercials,
websites and other multimedia projects.
Helpful Steps
adapted from Castro, p.32:
- Figure out why you're creating this website. What do you want to convey?
- Think about how you can tailor the content to appeal to your audience (in your case, perhaps a potential employer).
- How many pages will you need? What sort of structure would you like your site to have? Do you want visitors to go through in a particular direction, or do you want to make it easy for them to explore in any direction they choose?
- Sketch out your site on paper (or use tools like Microsoft Word's drawing tools or PowerPoint's organization charts). Remember that the focus should be on the content of the storyboard, and not its design.
- Devise a simple, consistent naming system for your pages, images, and other files (see Castro, p. 26)
Assignment 1 (Storyboard) is due by class time Wednesday,
September 13. If you create the storyboard electronically (e.g. using
Microsoft Word or PowerPoint), you can send it to the instructor via e-mail
attachment (with "HTML1, Assignment 1" in subject line), or
print a hard copy and give it to me in class. If you sketch out your website
by hand, please bring in a hard copy to class. With either method, be sure to
keep a copy for yourself.
