It is official! Sanya City on Hainan Island will host the grand finale of Miss World 2004 on December 4th, 2004, at the 'Crown of Beauty' theater where last year's event was held. A press officer of Sanya City said the local government began negotiating with the competition's organizing committee on hosting the 54th Miss World Competition soon after the 53rd one, satisfied with the publicity the resort received. Julia Morley expressed satisfaction with last year's competition and announced that over 120 countries will be represented in this year's pageant. The signing was not a clean sweep. Many Chinese cities expressed interest, but the northern beach city of Dalian emerged as Sanya's greatest competitor, flying in Ms. Morley and a team of Miss World officials to convince them to move the pageant, and Ms. Morley had seriously considered doing so, but a last-minute outbid by the Sanya Government left the people of Dalian disappointed. |

Femina Miss India-World ResignsApril 1st, 2004 | ![]() Times Infotainment Photo |
Amid the controversy set over her age and marital status, today Femina Miss India-World 2004, Lakshmi Pandit, gave up her crown for good. There is no full confirmation yet that Lakshmi was indeed married to Siddharth Mishra, a medical school colleague and aspiring model with whom she left Mysore, but most friends claim they posed as married to gain an apartment. The big issue seems to be that Lakshmi was, according to press sources, born on April 11, 1979, making her 25 years old (In a week's time) and therefore ineligible for Femina Miss India and under traditional rules, Miss World. Officially, Lakshmi claims that she does not want to go to Miss World with a 'tainted' image, and communicated a legal affidavit stating she is not, and has never been married in any form. It is yet to be seen if Siddharth Mishra has been disqualified from Friday's Manhunt India event. Pandit has turned off her mobile and has left her current residence, presumedly hiding out from the Indian press.
At this time, the Times Group has not officially declared who will go to Miss World 2004. There is no precedent in Femina for such a thing. The strongest rumor is that Sayali Bhagat, Miss India Earth, will be offered the title and that First Runner-Up, Jyoti Brahmin will be elevated to the Miss India-Earth title subsequently. |

Froken Sverige CancelledFebruary 10th, 2004 | ![]() |
Executives of the Swedish tv channel TV3, announced that Froken Sverige, Sweden's national beauty pageant, has been cancelled due to a lack of sponsors as a result of low ratings. Interest has been going downhill, despite the pageant's attempts to make the the show more acceptable, by offering public voting and more personality emphasis. TV3 paid for Miss Universe telecast rights for the last time in 2002 (One of the last European countries to televise the pageant annually) and boycotted the Miss World telecast in 2002, and in 2003 did not continue with either. In addition, it lost the Miss World franchise last year, due to their continued insistence on sending the runner-up to the pageant, and usually offering her little acknowledgement. A modelling agency has gained this right. TV3 has expressed no interest in fielding a Miss Universe delegate by other means, and the Miss Universe Organization will probably not make an attempt to find a new licensee, as TV3 has been loyal for many years and may hold a contest next year. |

ABC, the network which is threatening the pageant, has demanded removal of the televised talent competition. Up until 1998, all ten finalists competed in the segment, but in 1999 it was cut to 5. ABC executives claim that ratings drop during this competition. Still, Miss America's nationwide network is not too pleased with the idea. Even if it was cut from the telecast, on a state and local level, and during the preliminary competitions, talent would remain. |

Paula Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organization, announced that the 2004 Miss USA Pageant will be held in Los Angeles, California, on April 12th, 2004, and it will be broadcast live on NBC from the world-famous Kodak Theatre. The theater is most well-known for hosting the Oscar's, the premiere film awards program. According to Shugart, the organization managed to get the theater due to a small opening available in that time. "This year's pageant will be an elegant primetime event featuring the most beautiful young women in the country competing from the most glamorous location in Hollywood." In addition, six top-secret delegates will be taping an episode of the series Fear Factor, where contestants complete some of the most gruesome tasks. It will air right before the pageant. Last year's 'Fear Factor Miss USA' was one of the highest-rated episodes, and helped to subsequently raise the Miss USA ratings for the first time since 1998.
Los Angeles was chosen as the pageant's location in a high-level series of bidding. Early on, Nashville, TN had refused the event, and College Station, TX, could not find the cash. According to San Antonio, TX mayor Ed Garza, "Money for last year's incentives came from hotel-motel tax revenue set aside for the city's ultimately losing campaign for the Pan American Games. But that fund's now tapped out." He did not rule out bidding in the future. Los Angeles beat the following cities: Los Angeles, CA, Baltimore, MD, Wichita, KS, and San Jose, CA. This year's Miss USA ratings are expected to rise once again. |

Where and where: January 21st in the High Court
Other facts: The Miss World license was owned by the defendent until 2003, when the plaintiffs made agreements on a new pageant. The crowning of the winner as 'Miss World' has set off her recognition as 'Miss Ireland' and has attracted a flood of corporate sponsors for the 2004 event. The defendents, who still supply contestants to the Miss Universe and Miss Europe Pageants, intend on holding their pageant before Miss Universe 2004, although it is usually held in the early fall (when the winner was sent to Miss World). Celina Rated 'Worst Actress' of the Year | ![]() photo |
In a poll run by Indiatimes, India's largest media conglomerate, Femina India-Universe 2001 Celina Jaitley topped the 'Film Farce' Awards in the category of Worst Actress. The satire is on the Filmfare Awards, the nation's largest film awards event, but is catered towards finding the worst of the year. Celina originally made her debut in the film 'Khel' this year, but it was the film 'Janasheen' which bagged her the award. The movie, aside from bombing at the box office and being plucked apart by critics, has highlighted Celina's acting talent. She plays Jessica, a half-blind violin player-star. Among the comments made about her performance are that she "looks like a spaced-out kid" or that she "delivers her dialogues like a 5 year-old". Here is one particularly interesting quote: "Her facial expressions are so lifeless that she looks stoned". Indeed, Celina is not only partially blind in the film, but partially dressed, in bikini's and various skimpy get-ups. Indeed, it is back to the drawing board for Celina!
