The new Miss Russia has already competed in numerous beauty contests and the national Elite Model Look Contest. Miss Russia traditionally competes in the Miss Europe Competition, and in late 2004 that will be Victoria's duty aside from other appearances. As for the 2004 Miss Universe Pageant in Ecuador, the chances are slim that Victoria will go. Either a runner-up will go, or the committee may choose to send the Miss Russia Universe 2003, Yulia Akhonkova, or possibly even choose a new titleholder. That remains to be seen.

Miss Venezuela-World Cries Foul; Other Delegates Give Their Input

Miss Venezuela, Valentina Patruno during the 2003 Miss World Pageant

Miss Venezuela, Valentina Patruno aired out her dirty laundry to the press earlier this week. While I can understand that not meeting expectations has not pleased her, some of her comments are unbelievable. Among then, she claims that most of the judges were Asian and there was only one Latino. As most of the pageant's viewers know, most of the judges were not Asian and why only one Latino judge being on the panel is rleevant, is beyond me. More importantly, she went on to mention how she was frustrated with her placement and felt she deserved much better. Miss Norway finished in sixth place? Who is right, who is wrong? Indeed, the Miss World Organization has never released its semi-final rankings, so all 15 of the remaining semi-finalists can claim to be sixth. Neither one has mentioned who exactly mentioned to them that they finished 6th.

Furthermore, Valentina stated her disapproval over the excess favoritism of Miss Ireland, who she claims was an unpopular choice among the girls for the winner. Interestingly enough, during the Miss Venezuela Pageant in October, a group of delegates came together to publicly protest the excess favoritism of Valentina, the then Miss Miranda, in the pageant. Perhaps this is revenge? In any case, no other delegates have come to support any of Valentina's claims, so her credibility has been put on the line as a result. We can only hope she has a good rest and can move on peacefully. Miss Bolivia, Helen Aponte, mentioned Valentina as one of the delegates who became extremely depressed after being cut from the final five.

Other delegates had some varying comments. Miss Philippines, Mafae Yunon, expressed contentment over her top 5 finish and said that she agreed with Ireland as the winner, although she also was rooting strongly for her friend, Miss Canada (Mabuhay Pageants). Miss India, Ami Vashi, expressed disappointment that she did not go further in the competition, but she says that she is proud of representing India internationally and might go back to school and get her MBA, being a graduate of Finance, and isn't totally opposed to acting (Times News Networks). Miss Northern Ireland, Diana Sayers expressed her excitement and delight over Rosanna's win, saying that she had tea with her the day before and joked about Ireland having two chances to win. She says, "Rosanna's not just beautiful, but really sweet, quiet and modest as well," and that she plans to meet up with her soon. She hopes that Northern Ireland can follow in Ireland's steps, as it is only a pageant newcomer. Miss Bolivia, Helen Aponte expressed happiness over her success in the Miss World Pageant, and with her extra titles, is the most successful Bolivian there in History. She was greeted at the airport by well-wishers and is planning to proceed to the Miss Atlantico International Pageant coming up and to continue her law studies. She says that she tried her best, and that "I am happy with the winner (Ireland), and if she won, its because she deserved it. The judges would know why they chose her. I am happy with my placement and in the competition I gave it my all" (El Deber de Santa Cruz) Miss South Africa, Cindy Nell expressed some disappointment at not being among the top 20. "I nearly toppled over when my name wasn't read out. The 106 women spent a month together in China before the ceremony and everyone had a pretty good idea who would reach the shortlist," Nell says. She says some contestants reacted negatively to Ireland's win, but that her being a South African helped her in this area. "South Africans have come a long way in dealing with this type of thing and I think we handle disappointment more graciously." She will give up her crown on Saturday and plans to market African jewellery international. (News24). Miss Puerto Rico, Joyceline Montero expressed satisfaction over her placement, saying that she did notpass unnoticed and held up Puerto Rico. She says she has plans to meet up with her best friend in the competition, Miss Lebanon, and that she was excited that both of them were among the 20 (El Nuevo Dia). Miss Peru, Claudia Hernandez said that it was difficult after she had an injury in her foot to perform in rehearsals and deal with walking in high-heeled shoes! She was given a special press conference in honor of her return, and next year there will only be one 'Miss Peru' who will be focused more on social causes. Where she will be headed, nobody knows quite yet. Miss Uganda, Salma Nassanga did not have anything to say about the winner, but about prejudices that existed. She feels that African delegates were less likely to be photographed or asked for interviews by the local and international press, while delegates from developed countries were big constantly getting attention. She is planning to focus the rest of her reign on education for female children (The Monitor)

Miss World Welcomed Home

Ireland is excited to get a look at its beauty queen, and so Rosanna Davison graced them when she landed in Dublin on Thursday afternoon. Riding in a horse-drawn carriage, her home town of Dalkey welcomed her back. In addition, Dublin's Lord Mayor, Royston Brady, threw a civic reception in her honor at his current residence, the historic Mansion Hall.

Tommorrow, Rosanna is fully booked with a regimen of press commitments, but that evening, she will be taken to Áras an Uachtaráin, the President's official residence. Irish President Mary McAleese, who has already congratulated her, will meet with her in a small reception.

Rosanna is taking a year off from school to hold the title, although she will spend it travelling back and forth from London, Dublin and locations around the world.

Miss World Stops Over In London

The new Miss World, Rosanna Davison, stopped over in London before she returned to Ireland for her homecoming celebrations. On Sunday, she flew out from Sanya in father Chris de Burgh's private jet. The British press has been more abuzz with Miss World than usual this year, and this time in a good way. Mostly, this has to do with the fact that Rosanna is the first British Isles-based Miss World since 1983.

While in London, she landed at Heathrow, where photographers awaited her. Tuesday afternoon, she posed for photographers and made an appearance at a special Variety Clubs International (the official charity of Miss World) Christmas luncheon. Among the other guests were singer and actress Petula Clark, EastEnders star Wendy Richard, presenter Michael Aspel and magician Paul Daniels and wife Debbie McGee.

Miss World Makes Finishing Touches

The Hong Kong skyline at night will greet the expected 110 Miss World Delegates at the beginning of November
China is getting ready for possibly the biggest event that has ever been held in its borders. With journalists from the major Chinese and international press outlets invited to attend the pageant, with special accomodations and a specially-built media center at the pageant venue, local organizers are excitedly anticipating the November 8th-9th arrival of the girls, almost all of whom have been chosen in their national competitions. It indeed looks as if Miss World will finally manage to gather 100+ contestants. Meanwhile, construction on the Miss World Crown of the Beauty, the 5,000-7,000 capacity stadium being built for the pageant, is nearing completion for the final event. The 5-star Sheraton Sanya Resort will serve as host hotel for the contestants.

Itinerary: The girls will first arrive to Hong Kong on November 8th-9th, possibly because this year London will be taken out of the picture altogether. Hong Kong, a former British territory now under Chinese control, is an important financial center in the world and served as host city to Miss World 1989, the first time the final of Miss World was held outside of London. There, they will participate in some introductory activities, galas, welcomings and so forth.

Only a few days later, it will be on to the central Chinese city of Xi'an, a city most well-known for the famous Qin Terra-cotta Warriors & Horses Army. However, the city is simply a historically rich center, as it was the capital to twelve Chinese dynasties. Another charity dinner and gala will commence the visit, which will end when the girls travel on to Shanghai from the 16th-18th, now one of the world's largest cities. On top of being a major center for business, it also houses some of the best shopping, dining and entertainment experiences in all of China. A major Chinese charity group is organizing a special gala for the girls to participate in, as well as a visit to an orphanage, the grand Shanghai Theater and the city museum. There will also be a special fashion event.

On November 18th, the girls will travel to Beijing, China's capital and cultural and communication center. The city houses the famous Forbidden City, several major temples and state parks, and just nearby is the world-reknowned Great Wall of China. There will be plenty of pre-tapings, events and leisure for the girls in the first few weeks of their stay.

In the last couple of weeks of the pageant, the girls will finally fly into Sanya and be officially welcomed, soon beginning intense rehearsals for the pageant in the final week of the event for the December 6th telecast.

Miss Ethiopia World 2003

Ethiopia's first representative to Miss World ever has been elected
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia- The first ever Miss World Ethiopia (MWE) was chosen yesterday in the final competition held at the Addis Ababa Hilton. Miss Hayat Ahmed Mohammed, age twenty-one, was chosen by a panel of nine international judges as Miss World Ethiopia 2003. Atetegeb Tesfaye and Yordanos Teshager respectively won second and third runner up. The first of its kind gathering was attended by well over 500 with dignitaries, international judges, cameramen and celebrities encouraging the anticipation and excitement. The spectacular lighting effects put the final touches on the mood that had twenty-five young ladies wondering who among them would have a dream come true. The crowd seemed to have an inside point of view on the judging with extra applause going to the ladies who eventually made it to the final three. For a country experiencing its first Miss World pageant in the 52 year history of the competition it was a bit hard for some to believe how well it was going.

The first MWE was chosen from hundreds of applicants and finally from a core group of twenty-five young ladies. Over recent weeks Addis Ababa had been abuzz with speculation over who might take the title. The final twelve were chosen in a closed session on Wednesday with the group going to seven, three and eventually one at the Grand Finale event yesterday. The final seven were: Selamawit Adamu, Emnet Haile, Mister Alemayehu, Tsedey Tsegaye, Hayat Ahmed, Atetegeb Tesfaye and Yordanos Teshager. With their ages ranging from 18-23 and their height 1.70-1.82 the final seven were asked questions by the judges in front of the audience. The tension began to build as some were asked unexpected questions such as, as, “what kind of flower do you like and why?”

The final question for Hayat was, why should Ethiopia be the capital of Africa to which she explained, the former Emperor’s role as well as the country’s being home to more than 80 nations and nationalities and that it deservers to be the capital. Miss World Ethiopia Hayat Ahmed will be representing Ethiopia in the 53rd Miss World competition that will be held on December 6th of this year on the tropical island of Sanya, China.

No Zimbabwe in Miss World?

Originally, the finals for the Miss Zimbabwe Beauty Pageant - 2003 were scheduled for September 27th in Harare. However, sources said the Department of Information and Publicity in the President’s Office and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism have joined forces to take over the hosting of the troubled Miss Zimbabwe beauty contest, and want to use it to prop up Zimbabwe’s battered international image. The annual beauty pageant, which was supposed to have been held last month, has now been postponed to February 28, next year.
Crispen Sachikonye, a Miss Zimbabwe trust member, told StandardPlus that they were waiting for the go ahead from government before starting to organise the event. “The whole thing is now in the hands of the government, since we cannot raise funds for hotel bookings. We tried the Harare International Conference Centre where the cost was about $5,5m and we felt if we spent that much then the Trust would not get much for charity. The beauty contest had earlier been postponed to this weekend. It has also emerged that among many problems that the trust is facing is failure to raise funds for the show.

Miss World Australia 2003

Olivia will represent Australia at Miss World with the hopes of winning a title and bringing the pageant to her home country
Olivia Stratton, 22 years old and standing 5'8" tall, won the title of Miss World Australia 2003 at a beautiful ceremony held in Queensland's Sunshine Coast on Wednesday night (the 22nd). The show featured a stage with Greek pillars, and the contestants being whisked onstage by mopeds. The event will be televised delayed, but for the time being, model Olivia will begin preparations for Miss World 2003 in nearby Sanya, China. The organization hoped to make the event spectacular to impressive visting Miss World officials and reigning Miss World, Azra Akin, as they consider Australia to host next year's Miss World Pageant.

Pippa Hanson, 24, of South Australia was the first runner-up and Louise Bransgrove, 22, of NSW, second runner-up. Miss Photogenic went to NSW's Tara Rushton, 19, while the Miss Congeniality award, voted by all of the contestants, was shared by Sylvie Ghazal, 24, and Saskia Boerma, 20, both from NSW.

On a carefree note, Miss World Azra Akin had the following to say about pageants: ""They (contestants) should just be themselves and enjoy it but don't think it's the most important thing in the world - there are more important things in life -- It's just a good opportunity for a young woman to have a chance to see things and learn."
Note: Due to major organizational difficulties, the organizers of the Miss World Australia Pageant declared bankruptcy shortly after the pageant. Many parties who offered services to the pageant were left unpaid, and angry contestants were not given the prizes they were promised. That includes Olivia Stratton, who was left with with only a couple of weeks to prepare for Miss World and no sponsorship to do it with. Many designers pitched in to help her out for her wardrobe. The license for Miss World in Australia will be re-assigned for 2004.

Miss Venezuela 2003

Three winners pose after the pageant (Courtesy of Julio Rodriguez of Belleza Venezolana)
18 year-old Ana Karina Áñez, representing Lara, was crowned Miss Venezuela Universo 2003 on October 16th in a Venevision studio. No audience, aside from press, was permitted at the event, which was done on a much smaller scale due to the financial crisis in Venezuela. She is 1.80 m (5'11") tall and admits to having had breast implants, but says she hopes she does not have to undergo any other procedures. She will now represent Venezuela at Miss Universe 2004 in Quito, Ecuador

21 year-old Valentina Patruno, representing Miranda, was crowned Miss Venezuela Mundo 2003 and will be quickly prepared to fly off in a matter of a few weeks to the 2003 Miss World Pageant. Standing 1.71 m (5'7") tall, she lives in Miami, Florida (but was born in Caracas, Venezuela) and has held the titles of Miss Italia USA and Miss Italia Nel Mondo. She is currently studying Communications.

Finally, 19 year-old Eleidy Aparicio, representing Costa Oriental, clinched the title of Miss Venezuela Internacional 2003 and will presumedly try to fill the shows of Goizeder Azua, the reigning Miss International from Venezuela, in next year's pageant. She stands 1.76 m (5'9.5") tall. 20 finalists, chosen through weeks of show-down events of viewer voting, competed in the final event. Japan and Korea continued their semi-finalist streaks, which many still attribute to 'home judging'. Favorites such as Israel, Slovakia, Brazil and Chile managed to miss the cut, in this sometimes unpredictable pageant!

Miss Wales 2003

Imogen Thomas will be the 5th Miss Wales to hit the world stage since its re-induction
Pretty much every pretty girl in Wales turned out last night to strut their stuff in the final of Miss Wales 2003. In Swansea's Jumpin Jaks, 20 of the country's young beauties tried to bag themselves a place in Miss World's global final in China later this year. Cardiff lass Tazmin Proctor, Bridgend beauty Gemma Rose, Barry twins Anna and Sadie Whatling and Victoria Jenkins from Pontyclun, did South Wales proud, but failed to bring home the title. Top honours went instead to Llanelli lovely Imogen Thomas. Susan Bailey, chairwoman of the judges and Lady Mayoress of Swansea, was herself a finalist in the competition in 1979, also representing Llanelli. Winner Imogen shied away from advocating world peace in her resume, opting instead to list one of her interests as "working for those in need". But Anna and Sadie were the stars of the show, wowing the audience three times in six different costumes and pledging their support for one another along the way.

"I think we're both releived that it is all over," said Sadie, 21, as the winners posed for photographs. "We would only really have wanted to win if both of us could have come first." And Cardiff's Tazmin was not disappointed over losing out on the title. She said: "They were all really nice girls and it was an enjoyable day but it's not for me. "I wouldn't want to do it all again in China." Tazmin said her "attitude changed" when the comperer asked about her boyfriend playing for England, causing the crowd to boo her. The crowd's hostility added to what was already a difficult night for the 24-year-old. She had to take the stage having just learned that the father of her boyfriend - Arsenal soccer star Sol Campbell - had died after suffering a stroke earlier this week.
