Changes Made to Miss World Roster

September 18th, 2004

Germany's Inka is just one of many replacements

Changing of contestants ahead of pageants is nothing new, and preparation for the Miss World pageant is underway, and several countries have made key changes:

(1)The Miss Aruba committee originally designated Fatima Salie, last year's titleholder, for the pageant, because she could not compete in Miss Universe due to nationality restrictions. Now she has been replaced by this year's Runner-Up, Luisana Cicilia.
(2)It was originally announced that a new license-holder had taken over in Japan. However, instead of sending its own representative, the new organization has decided to respect the right of Minako Goto to attend the Miss World Pageant, for which she won the right in late 2003. Next year, they will send their own representative.
(3)Due to both obligations and age restrictions, Miss Germany Corporation has designated 2004 Runner-Up, Inka Weickel, for the Miss World Pageant. Claudia Hein continues as the pageant's winner.
(4)Uncertainties exist over many other countries. In Spain, it unknown if 25 year-old Maite Medina, will be permitted for the pageant. If not, she will be sent to Miss Europe and Second Runner-Up, Farah Ahmed, will go to the Miss World Contest. In Curacao, rumors float that Vanessa Van Arendonk, last year's Miss Curacao Universe, will be sent instead of a winner in this year's pageant, because of financial problems.

El Salvador wants Miss Universe 2005

July 14th, 2004

In a turn of events, a new contender has arisen to host the 2005 Miss Universe Pageant. Although unofficial reports nearly confirmed that Santiago, Chile, had won the bid around the time of Miss Universe 2004, nothing official has been confirmed. Aside from Santiago and Qingdao, China, Bangkok (Thailand) has emerged once again as a possibility, and now, San Salvador, El Salvador could host the event for the first time since 1975. The Miss Universe committee has invited them to submit their bid and organize the requirements to host the event, which include a $5 million fee. Where will this money come from? The country is only a decade shy of a traumatizing civil war. El Salvador is one of the poorest countries in Latin America as it slowly struggles to rebuild its economy. It faces heavy poverty and massive inequalities in wealth distribution. The organizer of Miss El Salvador, Eddie González, suggests that the money will come from Salvadoreans living abroad, with a $2 minimum donation per family. Salvadoreans abroad have helped to partially pay off El Salvador's deep debt, but are they really going to make donations to hold Miss Universe?

Rosanna Davison signs Miss World Contract

July 2nd, 2004

The reigning Miss World, Rosanna Davison of Ireland, has finally signed the contract of the Miss World Organization, said her solicitors today. Rumors had been floating around for many months that Rosanna was presented the contract, but refused to sign at that advice of her father, Chris de Burgh. It was also stated that she refused to attend a few engagements set by the MWO and attended a few engagements they did not arrange for her, a claim that her solicitors completely deny. They report that the contract was not presented until March, and negotiations took place until June, when it was finally settled. So far, Rosanna has travelled all over the world, to places like the U.S., Canada, China, Sri Lanka, Germany, Poland, England and so forth promoting the Miss World Pageant. She was in Sanya last week to promote this December's pageant and will be back in Ireland this week to crown her successor as Miss Ireland.

MWO Wins Lawsuit Against Nigerian

July 1st, 2004

The 2002 Miss World Pageant left a lot of financial disarray for the organization. This case has been settled after nearly 2 years.

The Miss World Organization left freed of a lawsuit from Nigerian businesswoman Angela Onyeador , who claimed that she was owed $1.31m (500,000p) by the organization for damages done to her. She claimed that she negotiated with a Miss World agent, and put up £200,000 ($524,300) as a guarantee for the pageant's 2002 Gala Dinner at London's Grosvenor House Hotel in return for 60 per cent of the profits. She won an order freezing the assets of Miss World Ltd while she pursued her claim in the High Court. But Justice Robert Reid said today that Allianz Nigeria Ltd, the company with which Onyeador made the deal, was not an agent for Miss World.

The company was run by Fidelis Anosike, "someone who might reasonably be described as a thorough-going con man," the judge said. The company has now gone out of business. Reid added that Onyeador, who said she wanted the money for a Nigerian charity she ran, was a witness "prone to inaccuracy" and he ordered her to pay Miss World's legal costs of around £455,000 ($1.19 million). "We have always said that this was nothing to do with Miss World. We are pleased that our position has been vindicated by the judge," said a spokesman for lawyers representing Miss World, which is run by Julia Morley. Morley told the court that Onyeador had described Anosike as one of the men who hung around the then-president of the Nigerian Senate, Chuba Okadigbe, "looking for an opportunity to make money."
