She had the accident while driving her car (one of her prizes) from a charity function, when a van cut her off with no notice, causing her to crash into it. She called up her boyfriend and was immediately taken to a hospital, where she will hopefully get to keep 'all' of herself when released. She was not present at the Miss Swaziland finals, and won't be able to attend a Parliament nomination session the day after, either. Miss World 2003 National Updates

Stefanie de Roux was considered the ideal girl to represent Panama at the Miss World contest; now it appears there may be no delegate at all
The search for Miss World Canada 2003 is underway, with the pageant being postponed from the final week of August to an unknown date in September. For now, curious visitors can access the site at: (http://www.missworldcanada.com/) and check out the national finalists as they are introduced, every few days.

The 2003 Miss World United States Pageant has signed a deal with Hairmax International, fast-movers in the salon industry, to be official corporate sponsors for the event. In addition, Rene Buenrostro, who has worked with several reality tv shows, is developing a state-of-the-art reality pageant series for the event for its national broadcast.

The 2003 Miss World Bahamas Pageant has been cancelled, according to the organizers. Apparently, poor promotion of the pageant led to a lack of sponsors and contestants for the event, which was scheduled for the end of July.

Controversy arose in the Miss World New Zealand fiasco, with one of the contestants, Samantha Strange, furious with the mistreatment of the delegates. She claims that the organizers underfed them so that they would not gain any weight and constantly yelled at them. She was upset that while she had to win a local title to get to the national final, she found out that many other girls just paid their way into the contest. Organizers say that the delegates were informed upon their arrival that the winner would not participate in the prestigious Miss World competition, and that they could not say anything about it to the press. Girls were told they could withdraw with a full refund, and several contestants took up the offer.

Panama is coming close to having no representative in this year's Miss World Pageant. With the movement of the pageant to November, which will only allow them to choose their 2004 representative, discussion took place over a contestant being handpicked, and the hot favorite was Srta. Panama 2002-2003 and Miss Universe semi-finalist Stefanie de Roux. However, due to a certain financial stipulation by the organizers about the representative paying for several things, including her own airfare, many girls have refused to go forth. Official confirmation on the news is being awaited by the local committee.

Rumors were flying back and forth about Joyceline Montero Garcia, the new Miss Mundo de Puerto Rico, having purchased the crown with the help of her wealthy family. Dirty laundry was aired in public by First Runner-Up, Miss Cidra, Angieliz Vázquez, who says that the judges were influenced by Joyceline's past pageant experience, and that she was most upset by the fact that the first 250 tickets were sold to Joyceline's supporters, a fact that Joyceline did not deny. Miss Cidra was pleased, she says, that the audience in the end was screaming for her when Joyceline was crowned and the girls told her that she was the true winner, and that behind the scenes, she did not find Joyceline to be a genuinely nice person, either. She is taking a hiatus from her studies due to financial difficulties for the time being. Joyceline Montero simply responded to the press by stating that she hoped Angieliz would come to terms with the decision easily.

Swiss Pageant Scandals Surface

Nadine Vinzens has been in the spotlight recently due to drunk driving charges and public admittance of Marijuana use.
Nadine Vinzens, Miss Switzerland 2002, has gotten herself quite some attention. After boycotting the 2002 Miss World Pageant, she is not making headlines again - but this time for drunk driving. Her license was revoked and she will have to pay fines. She has gotten even more attention by publicly stating her love of smoking Marijuana and alcohol. In addition to all of thise, Miss Switzerland 2003 contestant, Sonja Reifler, has gone to the press claiming that this year, only a true 'Swiss' girl should be crowned, like herself. The pageant has seen contestants and winners with origins in several different countries, due to its multicultural nature, and this year is no exception.

Miss Europe 2003 Is Underway

Miss Europe 2003 plans to be a spectacular event, with many international representatives who are already seasoned competitor
Miss Europe 2003 will be held September 12th in Paris. The spectacular event, to be televised live on TV France One, will be organized by Endemol Entertainment, who produced the 1998-2001 Miss World Pageants, which saw the modernization and implementation of fashion elements into the pageant. Most of the girls already went to Guadeloupe to take part in activities and video shootings for use in the final telecast. Among the contestants who have already attended other international competitions are: Marietta Chrousala (Greece), Alexandra Vodjanikova (Germany), Sanja Papic (Serbia and Montenegro) from Miss Universe 2003; Liliana Gorova (Ukraine) from Miss Universe 2002; Nina Slamic (Croatia), Elise Boulogne (Holland), Oksana Semenishina (Lithuania), Marta Matyjasik (Poland) from Miss World 2003; Catrina Supple (Ireland) from Miss World 2001. Miss World New Zealand 2003 - Not Going to Miss World???

Miss World New Zealand, Amber Peebles, will not represent New Zealand at Miss World as planned!
An interesting controversy arose with the crowning of 20 year-old Amber Peebles from Karaka as Miss World New zealand 2003. The controversy, it seems, is that the organizers of the 'Miss World New Zealand' contest have chosen not to send their winner to the Miss World Pageant as they had done with previous winners, starting with 1997 Miss World First Princess, Lauralee Martinovich. The First Runner-Up was Miss City of Sails, Katie Price, and the Second Runner-Up was Miss Palmerston North, Mara Tait Jamieson. Miss Personality was Miss West Harbour, Kelly Olver, and Miss Friendship was Miss Waitakere, Rebecca Rao.

Furthermore: The winner of this year's 'Miss World New Zealand' contest, Amber Peebles, will represent New Zealand at Miss International 2003 in Tokyo, Japan, while the First Runner-Up Katie Price will go to the Miss Earth Pageant in the Philippines. The organizers claimed that it would be better to have two representatives abroad instead of one, due to the high price of attending Miss World, and said that the girls were very excited. However, other notes indicate that the girls may have been forced to not say anything at the risk of losing their titles. A consumer institute advisor claims that the girls may be able to sue for being misled about the opportunity to represent New Zealand at the Miss World Pageant. It is assumed that the nation will not be represented at the said event.

Ethiopia Intends to Attend Miss World 2003

Miss Ethiopia World 2003, Yodit Getahun, did not get to attend the Miss World Pageant, but chances are that her successor will
Gadol Ton, executive director of the Miss Ethiopia World Pageant, has made the official announcement that he will have his pageant's winner representing Ethiopia on the international stage at the 2003 Miss World Pageant in China. This will be Ethiopia's first representative ever to the Miss World Pageant, while last year was the crowning of Yodit Getahun as the first Miss Ethiopia World, but it is assumed that this year's winner will be the actual representative to Miss World. Hilton Addis, Dark and Lovely, Alem Creative Arts Center, Phoenix promotion and the Ethiopian Airlines are among the main sponsors, and the event will feature a private preliminary interview to simulate the international competition.

Miss Vietnam: Missing and Returned

Mai Phuong, her family and others have provided several conflicting stories
Pham Thi Mai Phuong, the first officially-elected Miss Vietnam from 2002 and a semi-finalist in Miss World, has surfaced in the news once again. The last time she was seen was after a class, when was forced into a van with her police inspector boyfriend, Nguyen Bao Janh, who is also the city's police chief's son, and six other men. It is not believed to be an incident of kindapping, as no ransom has been asked, and Phuong was able to call her parents to let them know she was fine.

About a week later, she turned up and denied the allegations that she was kidnapped or had run away to avoid having to attend a British University, for which she was granted a scholarship. However, she claims that she still wants to go and study abroad and that she was merely 'on vacation with relatives' during this time. The details of the story are confusing and constantly mixed up, so one can only wonder what the real story is about the beauty queen gone missing. Perhaps the press will never really know!

- Megha Kawale (Miss India Talent Winner, 2001)
- Jaesse Randhawa (Miss India Top 5', 1994)
- Tapur Chatterjee (Finalist, Miss India 2001)
- Diandra Soares (Finalist, Miss India 1998)
- Fleur Xavier (Miss India-International 1996)
- Shonali Rosario (Miss India Top 5', 1996)
- Bhawna Sharma (Semi-Finalist, Miss India 2000)
- Zulfi Syed (Gladrags Manhunt Winner 1997)
- Rajneesh Duggal (Mr. India 2003)
Among others. Interestingly enough, it seems that out of tradition, none of this year's Femina Miss India winner has been invited, a notable showing of the increasing division between Indian pageantry and the ramp model world. 6'-tall Shonal Rawat, who made her major modelling debut with this event (One of the new faces chosen in a casting), was a Top 9' finalist in Femina Miss India this year and won three special awards. Originally was Kolkata, she says that she reached her 'saturation point' in the modelling world there and took the dive to Mumbai to take advantage of the industry. Among other things, she needed to drop weight to make the grade in the competitive market.

Azra In China for Tourism Campaign

Azra Akin on the ramp
Azra Akin, the reigning Miss World, took a visit to China with Miss World President Julia Morley, to participate in the Sanya Tourism Week Campaign, intended to help Sanya recover from the stigma attached to the SARS virus, which caused the cancellation of major events for most of the year, and almost caused the 2003 Miss World Venue to be moved. However, with the disease having disappeared from China, the celebration is heavily-anticipated. Azra Akin and the last two Miss World finalists from China, Bing Li and Wu Ying-Na, participated in several publicity events, including a fashion show, as part of the tourism campaign. "We are very, very proud to be here in China," Julia Morley, the Miss World chairwoman, said at a news conference. In addition, state-level competitions are being held to anticipate the September New Silk Road Model Competition in Sanya where China's Miss World Delegate will be chosen, although rumors are floating about a special pageant, Miss China World. Miss World Delegates will get a chance to tour several Chinese cities before landing in Sanya this November!

Ghana Sits Out in 2003

Stephanie Walkins-Fia finished 12th at last year's Miss Universe Pageant
With the cancellation of the 2003 Miss Universe Ghana Pageant and the delay of the Miss Ghana Event from its August-September timing to December, it appears that Ghana will be out at both of the world's major beauty pageants, Miss Universe and Miss World, in 2003. It seems the cause of this Miss World regular is an ongoing economic crisis in Ghana. Nonetheless, success has gone well with Model of the Universe-Ghana (Who will hold its int'l final there later this year) as well as Miss Malaika-Ghana. Ghana will be represented at the World Miss University Pageant in early August by Enyonam Dei-Tutu, the reigning Miss Kwame Nkrumah University of Science of Technology. It will also be represented in Miss International 2003 by an unknown finalist from Miss Universe Ghana. We can only hope to see Ghana back in the major pageant scene soon!

Venezuela Designates Delegates Abroad

Amara Barroeta will go to Miss World 2003

Goizeder will be a veteran when arrives at Miss International in Japan!

With the fall pageant season coming up, one very important pageant which will be moved to a late date is Miss Venezuela 2003, which is usually held near the end of September, but will be moved to October 31st, 2003, and for the first time in quite a while, it will be not held at the traditional Poliedro Theater in Caracas, but at a Venevision studio, due to the economic crisis which almost cancelled the pageant in the first place.

It is almost confirmed that due to the late date of the contest, Venezuela's representatives to Miss World and Miss International can not possibly be chosen then, so Venezuela's representatives to Miss Universe and Miss World 2004 will be chosen in this pageant. The following representatives have been designated:

Amara Elyn Barroeta Seijas, a 20 year-old, 5'11" student who represented Distrito Capital in last year's Miss Venezuela Pageant, will officially take on the title of Miss World Venezuela 2003. She was the big favorite last year but fell to a surprise winner, and started training for Miss World already, in order to make it to the 2003 pageant in China.

Goizeder Victoria Azua Barrios, a 19 year-old, 5'10", industrial relations student, has been designated as Venezuela's delegate to the Miss International Pageant in Tokyo this coming October 26th. Many will be familiar with Goizeder as last year's Miss World Venezuela and a Top Ten finalist at the Miss World Pageant in London.

In addition, Driva Cedeño, who finished Second Runner-Up at last year's Miss Venezuela Pageant as 'Miss Nueva Esparta', will apparently be their delegate to the Miss Earth Pageant in Manila. She is being sent by the Global Beauty Venezuela Organization, under special invitation.

- Meanwhile, Mister Venezuela 2003 is under way (http://www.mistervenezuela.com/) and will be held on July 26th, in order for the winner to be present at Mr. World arrivals at the beginning of August. The event will be incorporated into the traditional variety show "Super Sabado Sensacional".

* Of course, all of this will eventually be confirmed by the organization itself in the months to come, so it remains un-official but highly possible at this time.
