GT4 CLUTCH REPLACEMENT ST 165 & 185
SPECIAL THANKS TO BRIAN ILARIA , (Hamer Toyota, Burton-on-Trent), FOR HIS ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE.

During the period I had the car, I contributed to a web forum based on the car. Another active member was a guy called Ricky Lee, imaginative & tenacious, he could give lessons.

At the bottom of this page is a link to Ricky's version.

REPLACE ALL NUTS AND BOLTS BACK IN THE PLACE THEY CAME FROM WHERE POSSIBLE. THOSE THAT YOU CAN'T, PUT IN LABELLED GROUPS (I USE AROSOL CAPS).

REMOVE THE ENGINE COVERS.
REMOVE BONNET (HOOD).
REMOVE AIR FILTER.
REMOVE THE BATTERY.
REMOVE THE RADIATOR FAN, it's only 3, 6mm bolts and a plug , and it gives you a bit extra room.
REMOVE THE CHARCOAL FILTER (just below the diagnostics connector).
REMOVE BOTH FRONT WHEELS, you'll see why both later.
TAKE OFF CALIPER, hang it off the spring with cable ties, put disc somewhere.

**** DRAIN THE GEARBOX OIL **** DRAIN THE GEARBOX OIL ****
2 drains one on the gearbox one on the transfer box

REMOVE DRIVE SHAFT.
REMOVE THE MAIN CROSS MEMBER.
REMOVE THE CONTROL ARM.
REMOVE CENTRE CROSS MEMBER.
The engine and gearbox is now supported by 1 mount on the cam belt side, and 1 on top of the gearbox.
SUPPORT ENGINE FROM ABOVE.
PREPARING GEARBOX.
UNBOLTING GEARBOX.
NEARLY THERE
Undo the bolts for the fishplate, undo all the other nuts & bolts you can find around the bell housing. This should leave you with the 3 bolts and 1 nut that had me scratching my head. These are the 3 bolts at the top of the transfer box and the nut on the flywheel side about halfway down also on the transfer box. If you reach across the top of the gearbox you can feel them but can't get a spanner on them. You will have noticed on one of the pics (gearbox spanner) that there are 2 cut off 17mm spanners. For the nut and 2 inside bolts fit the spanner such that you can knock it up from below through the gap between bell housing and transfer box (click here) using a long bar or even socket extension and a hammer. If there's 2 of you, one can rotate (relocate) the spanner while the other hits it until it's loose. The top outside one isn't so bad once it's loose.
ADJUST THE GEARBOX POSITION.
REFITTING.

GOOD LUCK
