Scene Summary
Act III
3.1: Martha Corey is being tried by the court on the evidence that she
was midwife to the Putnams three times in which the babies died. Her
husband, Giles, attempts to appear before the court in order to prove
Martha’s innocence. The Judges take little notice of his evidence.
3.2: Francis tries to prove some of the accused innocence by stating
that all of the girls that accused them are deceiving the court. Francis, by
trying to bring forth this evidence, was declared in contempt by Judge
Hathorne.
3.3: Mary Warren goes to court to plea Elizabeth’s innocence. John’s
decision to not attend church due to his opinion on Rev. Parris’ holiness,
Becomes into question at the trial. Hale expresses his unjustness of the trials.
3.4: Parris is questioned on the fact that he saw Abigail and the girls
dancing naked in the forest. Mary Warren tells the court that she acted out
her spells and she had lied to them. She goes on to tell the court that Abby
and the others were acting as well. Abby, in a desperate attempt, begins to
act that Mary’s spirit is coming down upon here in the shape of a mysterious
black bird.
