Arthur A. Miller, The author of The Crucible, was born on October 17, 1915 in New York City. In 1932 Arthur graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. In 1934-35 he attended the University of Michigan, studying journalism. One year later, Arthur wrote No Villian, in six days. For this he recieved the Hopewood Award in drama. That year he transferred to an English major. In 1937, he rewrote No Villian, and renamed it The Too Arise. He recieved a major award from the Bureau of New Plays and it's produced in Ann Arbor and Detroit. Several years later, he wrote another book called Listen My Children, with the help of Norman Rosted. In 1940, he got married to Mary Grace Slattery, and later that year he wrote The Golden Years. From 1941-43 Arthur wrote many more books and plays. In 1944, Arthur and Mary had their First child, a daughter named Jane and in 1947 the had a son named Robert. In 1948, Arthur wrote Death of a Salesman in his studio which he built in Connecticut. Later that following year, Death of a Salesman premeires and recieves the Pulitzer Prize. For this book he also won Antoinette Perry Award, the Donaldson Award and the Theater Club Award, along with many others. In 1950, Arthur met Marilyn Monroe for the first time. Several years later in 1953, The Crucible premeires and also recieves the Antoinette Perry and the Donaldson Award. In 1954, his first radio production of Death of a Salesman airs on NBC. In 1956, Arthur moved to Nevada for six weeks in order to divorce Mary Slattery. Later that following year, he gets married to Marilyn Monroe. Also that year, Arthur gets the material which later becomes "The Misfits". In 1959, he recieves the Gold Medal for Drama from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. A few years later, in 1961, Arthur and Marilyn get divorced. Also that year, "The Misfits" film premeires, and he grieves the death of his mother. in 1962, Arthur gets married to Inge Morah and later that year he recieves the word of Marilyn's untimely death. The following year, Arthur and his wife have a daughter, Rebecca, and he also writes Jane's Blanket, his first children's book. In 1996, Arthur had his first sound recording of A View From the Bridge. He then loses his father. The first sound recording of The Crucible took place in 1972. In 1984, Arthur recieved the Kennedy Center Honors for his lifetime achievement. The Death of a Salesman, starring Dustin Hoffman, aired on CBS for an audience of 25 million. Arthur recieved the Mellon Bank Award for his lifetime achievement in the humanities, in 1991. A tribute to Arthur's playwright, on his 80th birthday, is held in England and America. Death of a Salesman was revived on Broadway for the play's 50th Anniversary in 1991. This wins a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. For Arthur's 85th birthday, there is a major celebration at the Arthur Miller Center in England and at the University of Michigan. Miller is awarded an NEH Fellowship and the John H. Finley Award for Exemplary Service to New York City. Inge Miller, in 2002, died. In 2003, Arthur was awarded the Jerusalem Prize. Later that year, on October 17, Arthur's brother Kermit Miller died. This author has made a huge impact in the literary world with his many plays and books. To this day, he is still honored for his excellent writings and is alive and kicking.
