10/06/2000, Friday - Awana Progress. Soccer.
(age: 6 years, 7 months, 19 days)
Nicole has been very busy. She really loves going to Awana on Wednesday night at the Baptist
church near us. Last week she earned her vest and book by memorizing verses and learning songs and mottos. This
Wednesday she earned a patch for her vest by learning more. She's always beaming when we pick her up on Wednesdays.
Soccer is more challenging this year. Instead of playing "herd" soccer, the kids are actually planing
defensive and offensive positions. They've won their first two games and I thought they looked surprisingly good
for just learning the positions. It will be nice and cool for tomorrow's game. Up until now, it's been very hot.
10/09/2000, Monday - Cold Soccer.
(age: 6 years, 7 months, 22 days)
The soccer game on Saturday was cold (42º), rainy and windy. After living through a summer mostly over 100º,
this was a big drop. In fact, the game temperature was more than 50º colder than the previous week's game.
They didn't cancel the game, but it was paused for a while. The city decided to test the tornado sirens that morning,
which terrified the girls. It wasn't exactly an ideal morning for soccer.
On a nicer day last week we were in the front yard enjoying the cooler weather. We have a small hill in the yard
and Nicole and Christopher decided to play Jack & Jill. I wished I had a video camera to capture those two
as they climbed the hill, hand in hand, and then rolled down it again. Very cute.
10/16/2000, Monday - Mrs. Davis-son. Plagues.
(age: 6 years, 7 months, 29 days)
Tina helps out at Nicole's school quite a bit. She's Nicole's "room mom". Our school has a pretty high
oriental population, so many of the kids call Tina "Mrs. Davis-son". Now many of the other kids are also
calling her "Mrs. Davis-son".
Yesterday Nicole was drawing a picture at the kitchen table. She asked for some help and I then saw she was drawing
all the plagues of Egypt and wanted help remembering them all. She did a good job with the picture. It's hard to
draw locust and flies. She crossed out the sun to show darkness. It was a neat, albeit awful, picture.
Nicole now loves to jump off of swings and see how far she can land. I remember doing that as a kid myself. She
always has a soft place to land, but it still makes me nervous as a parent.
10/25/2000, Wednesday - On Yellow. Lost Tooth. The Snake.
(age: 6 years, 8 months, 7 days)
On Monday Nicole got her first yellow at school. They use a color chart to warn the children
about their behavior. Nicole has been green since the beginning of Kindergarten until now. She didn't do a bad
thing, but she forgot something she should have been doing. She's supposed to mark her color in her folder and
she didn't do it for three days last week.
Nicole lost another tooth last night! It's the one on the bottom just to the right of the front teeth. I
knew it was going to be soon because she was showing me the tooth just before bed. She pushed it forward with her
tongue and then had trouble moving it back into position. And when I brushed her teeth it turned sideways. Still
she wouldn't let us touch it so it had to wait just a little longer to fall out.
Nicole and Christopher both found a snake in our kitchen last night. It's a little garden snake about 6
or 8 inches long and thinner than a pencil. The kids were amazingly calm about it. Christopher just came up to
us, pretty excited, and told us they found it. We caught it and put it in a plastic ice cream bucket. Nicole wanted
to take it to school today to show it, but we decided the public grade school might not appreciate that. Instead,
Chistopher will take it to his preschool (Nicole took a snake to preschool a few years ago).
10/31/2000, Tuesday - Loose Tooth. Soccer. School Picture
(age: 6 years, 8 months, 13 days)
Nicole has another loose tooth. This one is on the bottom left.
Saturday Nicole had great soccer game. Her team won 5 - 1. Nicole isn't as aggressive as the other girls to
the goal, but she's really good at defense. She can kick the ball hard.
We just got Nicole's school pictures back for the fall. She looks so grown up. It was a shock. She really looks
like a grade-schooler.
Last week Nicole had a bad cold that made her cough all night (aggrivates the asthma). She had been suffering from
it for a couple weeks. Last Sunday I asked her if she wanted to go up to the prayer rail at church during prayer
time. She agreed and we went up during the service. She was nervous, but very brave. It caused quite a stir in
the choir, I hear. Most kids are in childrens church, so they were wondering if she had cancer or something. The
good news is that night her coughing stopped. Prayer answered.
