09/01/2000, Friday - Meet The Teacher
(age: 6 years, 6 months, 14 days)
Last night was "Meet the Teacher" at Nicole's school. We went in and the teachers went over the curriculum and talked about grading and all the usual stuff. They've revamped the first grade to extend what Nicole's wonderful Kindergarten teacher has done, so there were Nicole fishing at science museum (9/16/2000)many of the same kinds of activities outlined for first grade that Nicole had in Kindergarten. They are really emphasizing reading, which is good. They showed us the books they were going to use. I became a big concerned because they looked too easy. After the presentation I looked at the books and found that Nicole should really be able to read the highest level they had (level 17) already! In fact, the books we brought for her to read during the meeting were harder than those books. After talking to the teacher, though, it seems that there are harder books and they are really working to individualize the learning so that each student can progress faster if need be. Another thing I've learned is that it's not "bad" for Nicole to read easier books. In fact it can make her more confident about her reading because it becomes a success. So I'm not as worried as before.

09/05/2000, Tuesday - Major Reading. Church Carnival.
(age: 6 years, 6 months, 18 days)
As a followup of the last entry, Nicole came home Friday night with a book to read from school. It is a very advanced book from the "Box Car Children" series. It's 154 pages long and has very few pictures (drawings, really). Nicole is loving it. She is already half way through the book and tells me all about what's going on in the story. I'm glad the teacher has recognized Nicole's talents and is encouraging her to progress.

Tina is also reading "Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingels Wilder. She started it before Nicole brought home her school book. Since it is even more advanced, Tina is doing most of the reading, but letting Nicole read paragraphs herself as well.

Nicole enjoyed yesterday's record hot church carnival. See Christopher's journal for more details. Nicole even tried the rock climb. She only got up about eight feet, but I'm proud of her for trying. One of her favorites was the parachute ride. Her smile just glowed as she slowly rose and then gently dropped her down.

Like Christopher, Nicole liked the idea of Mommy's prayer rock too. And she's using it as it was intended. It's cute to see the kids get involved in a fun project.

09/08/2000, Friday - Awanas.
(age: 6 years, 6 months, 21 days)
Nicole started Awana at a nearby church last Wednesday. She seemed to really like it. She was just beaming when I went to pick her up afterwords. It's similar to scouts except you learn about the Bible to earn your badges.

9/15/2000, Friday - First Big Book.
(age: 6 years, 6 months, 28 days)
Nicole has finished her first real chapter book. She read "The Boxcar Children" which is 154 pages long with only occational ink drawing illustrations. Her teacher gave it to her just before Labor Day. She really enjoyed the book and it was fun to listen to her tell us what was happening in the story.

Nicole's 1st grade photo (9/20/2000)9/18/2000, Monday - Second Grade Readers.
(age: 6 years, 7 months, 0 days)
Nicole brings home books from school to read. She is currently using second grade readers, but the teacher has acknowleged that they are too easy. I guess they'll be sending home harder ones in the future. Nicole buzzed through the book she brought home last. I think the teacher is also going to let her borrow the second "The Boxcar Children" book.

9/25/2000, Monday - New Book. School Progress. Soccer.
(age: 6 years, 7 months, 7 days)
Nicole is now reading the second "Boxcar Children" book. She tells me they are now having an adventure on an island. She seems to like the books and have very little trouble reading them.

We've been watching the Olympics and Nicole has really enjoyed the gymnastics. It really inspires her to do cart wheels, summer saults, etc. She's really getting pretty good. Speaking of sports. Saturday was Nicole's first soccer game of the fall. She did really well. They are now playing positions (last year they just ran after the ball). They have her doing some defense and she stopped a lot of balls. In fact, the other team almost never had the ball at their end of the field. As a result we won the game.

When we arrived at the park we had to find where her game was being played in this huge field full of soccer fields and people. As we walked along this boy waved and said "Hi, Nicole." Nicole waved back. I didn't know him, but he's in her class at school. I'm telling you because it was kind of a cute glimpse into Nicole's social life.

Last week Nicole had a school assignment where they had to draw some pictures related to a sense (sight, smell, etc.) and then label the pictures. Nicole was the only one in her class that got it right the first time. The teacher made all the other students redo the paper. I'm proud of Nicole, but wonder about the rest of the class.

9/28/2000, Thursday - Report Card. Awana Advancement
(age: 6 years, 7 months, 10 days)
Nicole's Spark card (9/27/00)Nicole got her first report card from First grade yesterday. She got all E's (Excellent) and A's, which is as good as it gets. We're very proud of her.

Nicole also completed the first stage of Awanas last night. She came home so excited she couldn't stop giggling. She now she gets her vest and the next book. She had to work hard learning John 3:16, the Sparks Motto, the Sparks Song, the pledge and other things.

I don't know why, but the other day Nicole asked Mom if she would tell Christopher the story of Job. Hmmm.

9/29/2000, Friday - More Monkey Bars
(age: 6 years, 7 months, 11 days)
Now that it's cooled off, Nicole is back to doing monkey bars. They have really long ones at her school and she can go all the way by herself. She tells me she does them every day at recess.
