11/10/2000, Tuesday - Lost Tooth
(age: 6 years, 8 months, 23 days)
Last night Nicole lost yet another tooth. This time it was her lower left lateral incisor (what a mouth full, no
pun intended).
Nicole also got her second 1st grade report card yesterday. Straight A's!
It hasn't affected her grades, but there were a couple strange tests recently that have bothered me. Nicole missed
six on a test where they had a couple paragraphs written on a sheet. She was supposed to read the paragraphs and
circle all the "word wall words". Those are a list of words that they are learning to read and spell.
Nicole can read so well and the word wall words are so easy. We have been learning to spell them, not memorizing
which words are on the wall. A few days later she got 100% on the word wall spelling test. If I had known she was
supposed to memorize which words were on the list, I would have helped her with that. It seemed like a poor test.
The other test was a reading test. The book she had to read was so simplistic and she was so bored by the end of
it that she missed a word. It was careless of Nicole, I admit, but the book went like:
The book is blue.
The car is blue.
The house is blue.
...
The grass was green.
She just substituted "is" instead of "was" and they counted it off. Then she was supposed to
elaborate on the book and be graded on the "depth of elaboration". Nicole didn't write much. The book
itself isn't deep, so what was she supposed to say? She got a low score which makes it look like she can't read
well. I thought that was a poor use of testing as well.
I know, I'm too sensitive and she is getting good grades. I'll stop here.
11/22/2000, Wednesday - Sweet to Christopher
(age: 6 years, 9 months, 4 days)
On Monday, Christopher's true birthday, Nicole played a balloon game with Christopher. They played it like a video
game. Nicole made Christopher a certificate that said he won 123 points. Then Nicole made him a paper that said
"You Won!" and that she loved him. It was really sweet.
Yesterday Tina and I met with Nicole's Talented and Gifted teacher. She had glowing praise for Nicole. Nicole
is the only first grader in a class with second and third graders. Nicole is used to being one of the best in the
class so I think she is sometimes intimidated by the older students. It sounds like the students all get along
really well and nobody puts anyone else down. Nicole is just a perfectionist.
