5/03/1999, Monday - Train Stories
(age: 2 years, 5 months, 14 days)
Christopher with short hair (4/14/1999)It is so much fun watching Christopher play. On Saturday he was playing trains as usual. He'll go around the family and assign name to each of us. I was Trevor, a tractor. Christopher told us he was Howard. We couldn't help but laugh because he was using a British accent. "I'm Ow-ard". Can you imagine a Texas boy with a British accent?

Once we've been assigned our parts, and he's changed them a few times, he'll go around the house making up train scenarios. At one point he was going down the hall and was using the red light from our motion detector as a train traffic signal. Later an imaginary "Percy" engine was under the couch. Don't know why that was.

5/12/1999, Wednesday - Oma's Visit
(age: 2 years, 5 months, 23 days)
Christopher has been enjoying his Oma's visit this week. He likes to curl up on her lap and say "I'm the yellow baby kitty. You're the Oma kitty." He then purrs and meows. Oma also brought him a toy airplane and got him a "Rusty" engine from the Thomas the Tank Engine set of toys.

5/19/1999, Wednesday - Trains in the Dark
(age: 2 years, 5 months, 23 days)
I spent much of my day on Saturday making a wooden train table for Christopher's Thomas the Tank Engine train set. Since it would cost over $200 to buy an official table, we decided to try making one. Tina found an old, but sturdy, coffee table at a garage sale and I used 4x4 plywood and 1x4's to create a new top that has a raised edge just like the real thing. I used a router to round off all the edges. It sounds simple, and really was, but it still took me about 7 hours to complete. We still need to paint it and Tina has felt to line the bottom.

Saturday night we dusted off my new creation and set it up in the toy room. Christopher was pleasantly surprised Sunday morning to see his train set put together on the new table. Several times throughout the day he came to me and said "I really like my train table, Daddy." That alone makes all the effort worth it.

This morning Christopher woke up very early (6am). I was getting dressed for work and Tina was still sleeping. He crawled into bed with Tina, but when I emerged from brushing my teeth, he was gone. I went out to the dining room and living room area which was completely dark. In the shadows of the dining room (now the toy room) I saw Christopher circling his new train table. I asked him what he was doing and he replied "I can't find Toby [one of the train engines]". I turned on the light, we found Toby and he was as happy as can be. I was amazed that he wasn't worried about the dark at all. He just wanted to find his engine.
