09/05/2000, Tuesday - Church Carnival
(age: 3 years, 9 months, 16 days)
We went to our church's anniversary party yesterday. They hold a carnival every Labor Day with all kinds
of amusement rides for the kids. Yesterday it was 111º but we went for over
a hour anyway. Christopher's favorite amusements were the little electric race cars and, of course, the
"train" which is actually a four-wheeler pulling a train of barrells. He rode the train six or seven
times.
They had all kind of blow up "moon walk" type rides. One of them was a huge sinking Titanic. It stood
at least 30 feet high. You climb up the middle of the sloping ship and then slide down either side. One of the
attendants too Christopher up since he's small, but when Christopher started to slide down, his feet stuck and
he tumbled head over heals. Looking pretty scared, the attendent brought him the rest of the way down. He was obviously
shaken, but when we asked him how it was he replied, "Perfect!" We need
to teach him it's okay to say he doesn't like something. He has that down for food anyway.
The other day Christopher played with his good friend Jeffrie. They had such a good time.
They've really become good friends and they play so well together.
Tina is making "prayer rocks" for an upcoming retreat. The idea is whimsical in that you are to place
the rock on your pillow, then when you go to bed at night you'll hit your head and remember to pray. After getting
in bed you throw the rock on the floor. In the morning, you step in the rock and it reminds you to pray again.
Anyway, the kids both really liked this idea and each wanted their own prayer rocks. Christopher doesn't have the
idea quite down. He wanted to sleep with the rock on his pillow. He even woke up the first night and came out crying
that he could find his rock (it had slipped off his pillow).
09/08/2000, Friday - A Couple of Jeffries, Green Electric Diesel
(age: 3 years, 9 months, 19 days)
Christopher has named one of his cars Jeffrie. This car is green and has eyes for headlights (the Chevron
car). Last night he was praying and he said, "Thank you God for Jeffrie my car. And than
you God for Jeffrie my ... umm ... human."
After Mommy put Christopher to bed, I went in to say good night. As I knelt down by his bed he looked at me and
said "Dad, can we talk a minute about my green electric diesel train?" I
didn't know what train he was talking about until he said, "You know, the one in the attic".
We've put an HO scale train in the attic because he's too young, but he's very interested in it and is trying to
coerce us into getting it down. It's not working.
09/18/2000, Monday - Christopher's "Other" Mom
(age: 3 years, 9 months, 29 days)
We think this story started when Nicole asked the question "Where was I before I was in Mommy's tummy?".
For the last week or two, Christopher has been talking about "The mom I had before Mom."
It was a surprise and, even though he's just a little boy, it kind of hurt Mom's feelings. The stories keep coming
with more elaboration. Sometimes he'll start a story with "When I lived with my other mom..."
This weekend he told us that his other mom lives near the island of Sodor (see Thomas
the Tank Engine) and that she used to take him to there a lot. What an imagination!
09/25/2000, Monday - Gift to Dad, Loving School
(age: 3 years, 10 months, 5 days)
Last week there was one memorable moment that meant a lot to me. Christopher woke up early one
day and saw me before I left for work. He got one of his prized train engines, gave it to me and said, "You can take this to work with you, Daddy!" And so I did. It was a special reminder
of a special little boy.
Christopher is enjoying going to preschool. He even told Tina the other day, "I love
school, Mom." He just goes three mornings a week and has "extended day" on Wednesday
where he stays for lunch. I've been quizing him on the alphabet and he seems to be learning very well. He recognizes
all the letters and is really cute when he "reads". When he knows the words, he'll point to the page
and say them slowly as though he's reading.
Boys are funny sometimes. The other day I was sitting with Tina in the kitchen. The kids were playing out back.
Christopher opened the sliding door, threw a dead leaf onto the kitchen floor, glanced at me with the look of "I
hope you don't mind", then closed the door and ran out to play some more.
09/29/2000, Friday - Bumps and Bruises, Buzz Costume
(age: 3 years, 10 months, 9 days)
Christopher likes to do monkey bars like his sister, and is very brave, but he gets himself into
trouble and as a result is covered with bumps and bruises. He also likes to climb our Crepe Mertle bush like Nicole.
The other day I had to save him when he fell and was hanging by his shirt which was caught on a limb. We have to
keep our eyes on him.
Christopher has a new Buzz Lightyear costume for Halloween. Yesterday Tina took him to Sam's to shop and he
had to wear the costume. It consists of blow up wings with breastplate and a wrist band communicator. Most everyone
at Sam's kept asking him "Who are you?" and he'd proudly reply "I'm Buzz Lightyear". When he
realized out he was getting so much attention he started going up to people and wait for their reaction. He'd tell
his mom, "I'm going to show that clerk over there." He'd go, get their reaction and come back beaming.
There was one man that just ignored him. He was very upset about that, but most everyone was really friendly and
wowed over his costume.
I came to work late today and got to take Christopher to his school. He loves going. He walked in and right
away looked to see who was the "Lucky Duck" (helper) for the day. He said, "Look, Dad, Christianna
is the Lucky Duck!" It seems he can read their names. With her name so close to his I was surprised he recognized
the difference.
