October 24, 2000 Tanj. (There Ain't No Justice) Black cow, dark night, misty, had been raining, no moon - by the time I saw the cows in the road it was too late. I ALMOST stopped, but almost ain't enough when you're talking 1200 to 1500 pounds of beef on the hoof. The truck went about another 15' after hitting the cow. I was terrified the thing was going to come through the windshield and kill me, but I slowed down enough to keep that from happening. Naturally the only guy within 2 miles who has black cows claims they weren't his. The truck was totalled. Fortunately I had slowed down enough that (despite not wearing a seatbelt) my only injury is being stiff from when my muscles all locked in anticipation of 1200 pounds of cow coming through the windshield at me. I didn't even hit the steering wheel, let alone the windshield. There was a tag in the dead one's ear and the other one was still wandering around on the road - another guy (drunk as a skunk) almost hit it right after I hit the first one. Someone had almost hit them just minutes before me and had stopped up the road to let somebody know there were stupid cows wandering around on the stupid road. By the time the sherrif got there nobody knew what had become of the other one. Nobody was holding out much hope that anybody was going to claim these guys. So I'm out the truck I was counting on lasting me another 100,000+ miles. Tanj. If I'd had the presence of mind to do it I should have gone after the other live cow. If that farmer didn't own the dead one the live one must not have been his either. At least I'd have come out of the thing with my very own cow, right? --
