August 1, 1999 Things are moving apace, FINALLY! They came and drilled the holes last week and this week I will be pouring the cement for the footers. By next weekend I hope to have a pole-raising party. Hopefully will be able to get the poles up, plumb and square, and the headers and maybe even the bottom wrap. Since the lumberyard doesn't carry 12' poles, I've decided that since I have to use the longer 14' poles I will go ahead and suspend the floor 7' from the high end, which will leave me roughly a 1.5' to 2' "sidewall" on the upper floor. That's figuring the effective height of the low end is about 14' minus 3.5' (roughly, for hole depth with 8" thick footer) which is about 10.5' of pole sticking up out of the ground, and then less the approximately 18" drop makes the effective height at the high end about 9' from ground level at the high end. So about a 2' sidewall at the high end, with excess pole length to be cut off level with the lowest pole at the low end. YOWSA! This will reduce the size of the gambrel roof somewhat and also leave a bit more headroom in there. Shouldn't be much harder than the original plan design for the roof, and probably will be easier since I'll be dealing with smaller pieces of lumber now (and a bit cheaper, as well!). I will be taking pictures as things progress. When I get the chance to hook my scanner back up, I'll be posting them. Stay tuned!
