Resources
It's amazing how many homesteading resources are out there
- if you can just find them.
The Online Homesteading Resource
maintains a much better, more thorough, and more up-to-date list of homesteading
links than I could ever hope to, so I won't even try to maintain a comprehensive
set of links. I will list a few of my favorite
sites or sites I find particularly interesting. Other than that,
you can check my bookmarks and FAQ's
for other relevant links. See Recipes
for how to make everything from whitewash to bayberry candle wax. Check
the Do It Yourself page for plans to construct
a masonry stove, a compost tumbler, and more.
With the help of many, many other people over the years, I have compiled
the Homesteader's Booklist. This is
a list of nearly 400 titles to date (and more to come!) that may be of
use to small farmers, homesteaders, and owner/builders.
Note on out of print titles. Try a book search on The
Advanced Book Exchange. They have over 4000 seconhand booksellers
in their database, and they also provide a very useful Want List utility
so that you may enter a title or author you are looking for into a database
and it will automatically search all of the ABE affiliate shops whenever
the inventory database is updated, generally at least once a day. I have
no affiliation with The Advanced Book
Exchange whatsoever, but I am a very satisfied client of several
years.
Before you buy. Get a copy of the book you are interested
in via interlibrary loan through your library - I would recommend doing
this before you buy any book, new or used, if at all possible. Not everyone
finds a given title useful or interesting. Please keep that in mind when
perusing the Homesteader's Book List
- it is a a list compiled from many, many sources, and not everyone will
agree on the usefulness of every title.
Please also check out the Finding Out More
and Homestead Info pages for more
links and advice if you have not already done so.

raising your own food, being self-sufficient, alternative farming practices,
organic gardening, composting, aquaculture, and other types of alternative
