Brad Cavanagh
Brad was one of the UVic Phys/Astr Co-op
students working at the JAC. He worked for Frossie Economou, writing
up IRAF and Perl scripts. Known for his unique legs (thanks, Sara!), and
for being unbalanced (thanks to Andrew's car), it seems like he's
the only person on the whole island not to have seen live lava. He was
also the creator of "Maui - The Movie", a rather large review of his weekend
trip to Maui with Intrepid Group #2, and subsequently
sent it around to almost everybody he knew.
Michael Letawsky
Mike was the other UVic Phys/Astr Co-op
student at the JAC. He worked for Tim Hawarden on a faint standards project
that seemed wrought with problems that had to be fixed. Although he
didn't make it into any of the intrepid group photos, he was the 'leader' of
the intrepid group that nearly got arrested, the intrepid group that got yelled
at by a lifeguard, and the mini-intrepid group that ventured into Pe'epe'e
Falls for the first time. He also scared the living bejeezus out of the other
three by grounding out one of the television picture tubes with some wire
and a screwdriver, not to mention the time he nearly blew up part of the house
trying to light the hibachi.
Chris Salvian
Chris was the UVic Mechanical Engineer working at the JAC. He worked for Ian
Pain on some sort of project that involved a problem with a central bearing on
the JCMT. One of his duties (which he did quite well!) involved attracting
all the UV rays from the sun to his body so other people wouldn't get
sunburned. Also remembered for breaking his wrist early on in the term, thus
making a name for himself at JAC, Chris has returned to UVic for a term
of classes. Oh, and Chris's theme song is "Rattlin' Bog" by The Irish
Descendants. Either that or "Sunglasses At Night" by Corey Hart.
Andrew van Wensen
Andrew was the Electrical Engineer from UVic working at the JAC. He worked
for Fred Baas (although it seemed like he was working for every engineer in
the place!) on a computer control system for the dish of the JCMT. Made a
nice little GUI too, I might add. Andrew was the chief source of transportation
for the Hilo-based students, and he selflessly drove people everywhere. And yes,
I do mean everywhere. I (Brad) think Andrew is made up of an undiscovered
gas, because he seems to fill up all the available space. Hey, you didn't
have to sleep in the same tent as him on Maui, okay? Sleeping Beauty will
be returning to Canada at the end of September to find a job. Hopefully
engineering-related, because I just don't see Andrew as the type to be
flipping burgers.
Sara
Ellison
Sara (pronounced /sah'-rah/, not /sA'-rah/) came over to the JAC from
England, where she finished off her Masters in Physics and Space Science.
She worked for John Davies doing observations and data reduction of
Centaur objects.
She pretty much gave us the boot in the bum when it came to doing things
on the Big Island, having single-handedly co-ordinated almost every
weekend. No, she wasn't that bad. There was one weekend where someone
else made the decisions. Sara's bizarre language was the chief influence
of Andrew's document titled "Saraspeak".
Sara will be returning to
England to start her PhD at Cambridge.
Meghan
Gray
Meghan was (yet another!)
Canadian student, but she worked at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in
Waimea, about an hour or so away from Hilo. I don't know who her
supervisor was, but she spent most of the four months awaiting a new
camera for the 'scope which arrived in her last couple of weeks. She
selflessly drove down to Hilo a few times, driving us around when Andrew's
car was unavailable. Meghan was also one of the three who managed to stay
up until 5:30 in the morning, at which point we headed down to Ken's for
some pancakes. Meghan will be heading to England in October to start her
PhD at Cambridge.
There are also a few people for whom I do not have pictures:
- Christina O'Regan - Christina also worked at the JAC for
Lorne Avery, doing some sort of computer modelling. She unfortunately had
to head back to Canada early, and is currently continuing with her studies
at the University of Waterloo.
- Mike Ade - A friend of Christina's who came down for a month or
so. He went along with us to Maui. Other than that, I don't know much...
- David Somethingorother - Another friend of Christina's who came
down for a month, but left early when Christina left.
- James Morden - A friend of Sara's who came down for a couple of
weeks. He came along to Maui and made it more interesting than it would
have been. His musical tastes were, um, diverse. Oh, and he's got a cool
job; he sets up electronics for big-name concerts.
