ESPN's Global Football League

Week 3

Reviews - Tuesday, September 16th
by Carlos Curro, Sao Paulo Travelers owner

How could we ask for a more exciting week than Week 3 on GFL - Global Football League ? We had three games decided by less than ten points, and two of them had Monday Night showdowns to decide the winner. Also, the first big upsets of the season, as two 0-2 teams defeated two 2-0 teams. After all games were over, only one team remained undefeated at 3-0.

Let's get to the surprises:

Screaming Meanies 43 vs. 48 New York Freaky Fat Cats
Sao Paulo Travelers 64 vs. 55 Bloody Sabbaths
Sao Paulo Big Passaros 34 vs. 65 Crown City Thorns
The Lounge Lizards 58 vs. 62 Da Kine Hawaiian
New London Wacker Boyz II 82 vs. 46 Kauai Rainbows

(NFL Bye teams on Week 3: Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, Tennessee)

Screaming Meanies 43 vs. 48 New York Freaky Fat Cats

The Screaming Meanies were playing some great football, being 2-0 in the season, and both wins over divisional opponents. And they're playing the worst team in the Eastern Division, as the New York Freaky Fat Cats had yet to prove their now famous 3-RB lineup could win some games for them. So, only a fool would say the Cats had a chance, right? Ok, you know the answer by now. Led by RB's Barry Sanders and Chris Warren, the Cats jumped ahead of the Meanies, who tried to fight back under a 3-RB lineup (!) of their own. RB Warrick Dunn helped, as did RB Terrell Davis, but QB Erik Kramer let the team down, as the Cats got their first win on a very close finish on Sunday, 48-43. So, in the first three weeks, at least once per week a 3-RB lineup team has lost a game, and only once (this game) they in fact won a game - against another 3 back lineup. Maybe it's the reverse version of the run and shoot (I need a term definition for this kind of offense - owners, help me out.), and can develop into the offense of Fantasy Future! So, the Cats improve to 1-2, giving the Meanies (2-1) their first loss of the season.

Sao Paulo Travelers 64 vs. 55 Bloody Sabbaths

This game featured a 2-0 team with the best attack (tied) in the league, the Sao Paulo Travelers, and the worst offense and winningless Bloody Sabbaths. Altough some said it'd be a blow-out, this turned out to be a very exciting game, decided on Monday Night. On Sunday's games, the Travelers were down in the beggining, thanks to a remarkable performance by Sabbaths' featured back Napoleon Kaufman, who scored twice and rushed for 140 yards. But the Sao Paulo team fought back, under very good performances by QB John Elway (4 TD passes) and an amazing 8 turnover effort by the 49ers defense, lifiting them over the Sabbaths. But, as the Monday Night Game started, the Sabbaths had three players (RB Emmitt Smith, K Richie Cunningham and the Eagles D) against two for the Travelers (RB Ricky Watters and TE Eric Bjorson). The Sabbaths made a very dangerous run under their kicker (17 points) and a very inspired Eagled D (2 sacks, 2 Turnovers, 1 TD). But Watters also had a nice game (106 rushing yds) as the Travelers (3-0) escaped with their third win, despite not scoring a single rushing or receiving TD, while the Sabbaths (0-3) fell short, 64-55.

Sao Paulo Big Passaros 34 vs. 65 Crown City Thorns

In a huge divisional matchup, the undefeated Sao Paulo Big Passaros faced the upcoming and dangereous Crown City Thorns. The Thorns recovered from a slow start by scoring 71 points in week 2, and were hoping they could surprise the Passaros' "Offensive Machine". Well, it's not wrong to say that the "machine" wasn't working properly, as their offense struggled badly, scoring no rush/receiving TD's, only 34 total points (their previous average was 74 per game) and having K Chris Boniol as their best source of points. On the other hand, the Thorns (2-1) continued their impressive run, scoring 65 points and getting their second straight win. RB Curtis Martin received a game ball for his amazing performance on Sunday Night (199 yards rushing, 1 TD), but his supporting cast wasn't bad at all, as four of their five "6-point players" (RB/WR/TE) had at least 8 points each.

The Lounge Lizards 58 vs. 62 Da Kine Hawaiian

Another divisonal machup between a 2-0, very impressive The Lounge Lizards team, against a 0-2, problematic Da Kine Hawaiian, whose offense had struggled lately. And what might have been seen as another blow-out game turned out to be another very close game. With Sunday's games in development, the Hawaiian jumped ahead with nice games by a rejuvenated QB Steve Young, WR Herman Moore and TE Wesley Walls. But the Lizards came back strongly, as their Patriots Defense played well on Sunday Night, as well as WR Keyshawn Johnson. By Monday, they only needed four point by WR Irving Fryar to tie the game. The Lizards were only 80 yards away from a tie. But Irving Fryar played poorly, scoring not even a single point, as the Hawaiian (1-2) secured a tight, first victory over the now 2-1 powerful Lizards. Too bad the Lizards didn't start K Gary Anderson, as he scored 17 points, while their starting K Jeff Wilkins score only 2 points. But, hey, it's easy to say that now. They'll try to rebound next week against the undefeated Travelers, in a match that promises to be a very good one.

New London Wacker Boyz II 82 vs. 46 Kauai Rainbows

The last game of the week featured two teams trying to get some respect and prove they are playoff contenders. The Rainbows were winningless, and the Boyz were 1-1 before the game. Which one would start to roll? Well, the Boyz appeared to have something to prove, as they scored at will, finishing the weekend with an amazing 82 point effort, 17 more than the next best scoring team whis week. The Rainbows are still looking for answers, as their game time decision (they did not start WR Rod Smith and his 18 points) was very costly. But even so, the Boyz were huge, led by TE Brent Jones, a more like last season Panthers D, and great overall performance (only RB Terry Allen, playing injured, scored less than 7 points). They improve to a second place tying 2-1 in the division, and they have now the second best attack with an average of 64 points per game. The Rainbows 0-3 start could become worse, as next week they face the streaking Crown City Thorns. They will certainly have to score a good amount of points to beat them.
