Fantasy Football '97

ESPN's Global Football League

Week 3

Previews - Saturday, September 13th
by Carlos Curro, Sao Paulo Travelers owner

Week 3 in the NFL marks the first bye week of the season, as four teams will get a chance to rest his players. As for Fantasy Football, this marks the first time good coaching really matters, as owners must  look for answers in their benches to substitute for Bye Week players.

So, Global Football League Week 3 should be an exciting one. After a week of moves and heavy waiver activity, teams are trying to come up with the perfect lineup, balancing their teams and trying to show they have a little depth to overcome byes and injuries. Let's check out the upcoming games:

Screaming Meanies (2-0) vs. New York Freaky Fat Cats (0-2)
Sao Paulo Travelers (2-0) vs. Bloody Sabbaths (0-2)
Sao Paulo Big Passaros (2-0) vs. Crown City Thorns (1-1)
The Lounge Lizards (2-0) vs. Da Kine Hawaiian (0-2)
New London Wacker Boyz II (1-1) vs. Kauai Rainbows (0-2)

(NFL Bye teams on Week 3: Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, Tennessee)

Which team was the most affected by the bye week? Which teams are trying to come back after struggles? Let's do some previewing, as this week's games feature three 2-0 teams going against three 0-2 teams, who will be looking for a turn around against them:

Screaming Meanies (2-0) vs. New York Freaky Fat Cats (0-2)

The 2-0 Meanies have the fourth best attack in the GFL. They only had one player to substitute due to bye, as WR Jimmy Smith has to sit this one. Relieving at his position will probably be rookie sensation RB Warrick Dunn of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who scored 13 points last week. But the major change in the Meanies lineup didn't come from the bye situation, as QB Dan Marino will be hooked. Upcoming QB Erik Kramer of the Bears will get a shot at the starting position. It appears to be a good coaching move, as Miami plays at Green Bay, while the Bears host the Lions. On the other side, the New York Freaky Fat Cats are still looking for their first win. But they're one of the most penalized team because of the bye, as their best combination is out this week (QB Jeff Blake and WR Carl Pickens). They'll have to rely on QB Elvis Grbac and WR Jake Reed to do the job for them. Also, the 3 RB lineup continues, although it has yet to prove it right for the Cats.

Sao Paulo Travelers (2-0) vs. Bloody Sabbaths (0-2)

Another matchup between a 2-0 and a 0-2 team, the Sao Paulo Travelers are tied for the best attack with the Sao Paulo Big Passaros, but this week they cannot count with #1 ranked RB Eddie George, as the Oilers have a bye. They had heavy waiver/free agency activity this week, looking for a replacement, and decided to start WR Chris Calloway. The Bloody Sabbaths had two awful first weeks, scoring less points than anyone else (30 less than the second worst offense). So they also checked the waivers, and came up with star WR Andre Rison, who had a huge game last week and is now a starter for the Sabbaths. They also picked up a very good kicker in Dallas' Richie Cunningham, the #1 ranked kicker in GFL today. He'll also start, as the Sabbaths are looking to rebound from the very slow start.

Sao Paulo Big Passaros (2-0) vs. Crown City Thorns (1-1)

The Sao Paulo Big Passaros attack has been awesome, but don't count out the Crown City Thorns, as last week they scored 71 points in route to their first win of the season. Now, they'll have a very important division matchup against the undefeated Passaros. The Passaros got more power in the offense as they picked up TE Rickey Dudley off waivers, and he'll start for the "byeing" Tony Mcgee. RB William Floyd is also new to the starting lineup, as they had to substitute for Jacksonville RB James Stewart (also bye). The Thorns also had to make some lineup changes this week. They picked up kicker John Hall of the Jets to play for Mike Hollis, and the Bucs Defense will substitute the Steelers D. The powerful Thorns lineup may benefit even more if WR Antonio Freeman starts to roll this week against the Dolphins. Watch out, folks, this should be a shoot-out.

The Lounge Lizards (2-0) vs. Da Kine Hawaiian (0-2)

The Lizards have been playing very well lately, as they have a lot of confidence in their starting QB, Jeff George, who appears to be the starter over Brad Johnson, who's also playing very well. They're also showing some depth, as they had to substitute for the bye week of RB Natrone Means, and they came up with RB Raymont Harris of the Bears, who's playing great football lately, including some long TD runs. Their other RB, Garrison Hearst, is coming off his best week with 10 points. The Hawaiian will start QB Steve Young, who's returning after a concussion in week 1. Young will probably try to show he can still play, so by having something to prove, he might surprise and score a lot of points. But the problem comes at RB, as Jerome Bettis is out (bye), so the Hawaiian will have to rely almost exclusively on star WR Herman Moore to carry the load. The Chicago vs. Detroit game will be important for both owners, and RB performances should be a key factor in the final score.

New London Wacker Boyz II (1-1) vs. Kauai Rainbows (0-2)

The final game of Week 3 is the only one which doesn't feature a 2-0 team. The New London Wacker Boyz II will try to forget the last week loss to the Sao Paulo Travelers, and the Kauai Rainbows will try to forget both of their losses. The Boyz will need to have good games by their combination QB-WR from Baltimore: Vinny Testaverde and Michael Jackson. The Rainbows have last year Fantasy Football MVP, Brett Favre, but they can't find ways to win. They'll start (as of 11:00am ET Saturday) a total of FIVE Denver Broncos' players, so they'll go as far as Denver goes against the St. Louis Rams.

Carlos Curro's Picks: (3-2 last week)

Screaming Meanies over the New York Freaky Fat Cats (69-58)
Sao Paulo Travelers
over the Bloody Sabbaths (57-51)
Crown City Thorns
over the Sao Paulo Big Passaros (77-75)
The Lounge Lizards
over the Da Kine Hawaiian (72-48)
Kauai Rainbows
over the New London Wacker Boyz II (56-54)
