Fantasy Football '97 ESPN's
Global Football League Week 1 News and Notes - September 1st As the first weekend of the NFL ended this Monday, so did the first week of FF97 for the Global Football League. The biggest surprise came from both Brazilian teams, as the Sao Paulo Travelers and the Sao Paulo Big Passaros won their games. Although the Big Passaros did not have much trouble getting past the New York Freaky Fat Cats, the Travelers had to wait until Monday Night to secure their first win of the season over the Kauai Rainbows, who played very well under nice performances by RB Ki-Jana Carter and K Jason Elam. But the Travelers responded well with 3 TD's by WR Tim Brown and 216 rushing yards by second year RB Eddie George in route to a close 85-75 win. The Big Passaros really showed some offense in the first week, as they blew away the New York Freaky Fat Cats in a 92-47 win. The Passaros attack was awesome, with 4 TD passes by QB Drew Bledsoe and 2 TD receptions each by WR's Michael Irving and Jeff Graham, who was lined up in a good coaching decision by owner Luis Curro, who choosed Graham over San Diego WR Tony Martin, last year's best AFC receiver. In other games of the first week, the New London Wacker Boyz II defeated the Da Kine Hawaiian, 69-51. The Boyz couldn't get a single point from his Seattle Seahawks defense, but RB Terry Allen and WR Cris Carter played very well, scoring 2 TD's each. Although the Hawaiian also had two players with 2 TD's each (WR's Wayne Chrebet and Herman Moore), they suffered from QB Steve Young's concussion and his -2 total points. The Screaming Meanies scored 74 points, blowing out the Crown City Thorns, who could only score 17 points. As the Meanies defense scored 18 points, thanks to a good game by the Minnesota Vikings (and some poor playing by the Buffalo Bills), they won very easily. But the Thorns have a nice starting lineup, and next week nobody should be surprised if they score a lot of points. And finally, The Lounge Lizards beat the Bloody Sabbaths, 53-28. QB Brad Johnson, in his first year as a starter from week one, was a key to the Sabbaths, along with a nice performance by the New England Patriots Defense.
