COLONY / DOMINION OF CANADA
In 1867 3 British selfgoverning colonies in Northern America (Canada, New Brunswick
and Nova Scotia) were united into a new federal selfgoverning colony, also named
Canada. (1)
In the course of the following years this new entity gradually evolved towards a
semi-independent state and in 1907 the style of colony - which by then no longer
reflected the real position of the territory - was dropped and replaced by that of
Dominion.
Following the Imperial Conference of 1926 Canada became one of the equal members of
the British Empire and in 1931, with the Statute of Westminster, it finally achieved
full sovereignty, while remaining a member of the British Commonwealth.
(1) At the same time the former colony (or province) of Canada was divided into
two provinces :
- "Anglophone" Ontario
- "Francophone" Quebec.
For the provinces and territories which later joined the federation see here.
