Quebec, once the center of French Canada, was occupied by British troops in 1759
and formally ceded by France by the Treaty of Paris of 1763.
In 1791 its territory was divided into two parts :
- Lower Canada, with a predominantly Francophone population
- Upper Canada, with a predominant Anglophone population.
From 1841 to 1867 both parts were reunited into the United Province of Canada, but
at the founding of the Dominion of Canada they were again separated, the Anglophone
part becoming the Province of Ontario. (1)
(1) At the moment of its creation the province only included the southern part
of present-day Ontario. It was only in 1912, after the annexation of part
of the District of Keewatin, that the present frontiers were established.
