QUEBEC

CANADIAN PROVINCE OF QUEBEC

Quebec, once the center of French Canada, was occupied by British troops in 1759 and formally ceded by France by the Treaty of Paris of 1763. In 1791 its territory was divided into two parts : - Lower Canada, with a predominantly Francophone poulation - Upper Canada, with a predominant Anglophone population. From 1841 to 1867 both parts were reunited into the United Province of Canada, but at the founding of the Dominion of Canada they were again separated, the Francophone part becoming the Province of Quebec.
