Fri 9 - [at home] Got up at 10 o'clock as at 3 a.m. folks had started for Grafton. Put and Fred [Thomas] went to carry them. This afternoon Mrs. Goodrich and Jane have been here.

Jane's parents are apparently going to visit the various Tillotson families which have moved to Clinton County, Michigan in the communities of Elsie and Ovid. They would especially want to visit Jane's brother, William and his family, and sister, Eliza, and her family. They would also probably see Jane's cousin, Frank Tillotson, and his family. To get to Michigan they would be taken by wagon to Cleveland where they would board a boat for Detroit. It was then a wagon or stage ride to Elsie or Ovid.

Mon 26 - [at home] Washing. Brought the water from the spring. Uncle [Zadock Tillotson] brought [cousin] Carrie [Caroline Tillotson] up to spend a week with us.

Jane's Uncle Zadock Tillotson was the oldest child who came to Ohio in 1815. It was his young wife, Susan Caroline, who kept up their spirits on the long journey with her bright personality and sweet singing. She died in 1837 when Jane was only three years old. The next year Zadock married Almira Benjamin Babcock.

Zadock was born in Tyringham, Massachusetts in 1793. As a adult he was a blacksmith and a Whig. (Tillotson Gen) His farm was part of lot no. 11 of the original land purchased by his father, Samuel. Zadock's farm was the location of the original Tillotson log cabin. His land was on the extreme western edge of Brunswick and was adjacent to land owned by Lucius Warner who married Zadock's sister, Milly. By 1858 Zadock was not well and he would die in 1859. The changing condition of his illness can be seen in the November and December 1858 diary entries. Almira had been born about 1803 and, as a 57 year old widow, was living with her son, Zadock, jr., in 1860.
