UNCONSCIOUS-- That part of the mind that remains hidden.

UNCASTING-- See Closing.

UNCROSSING-- A spell performed to break an evil spell or curse. Also uncrossing ritual.

UNCROSSING RITUAL-- See uncrossing.

UNDINE-- A non-material elemental entity that is composed only of water.

UNFORTUNATES-- An old term used to describe those Witches who had been captured and tortured by the Inquisition. Estimates of thier numbers range from 100,000 to 9,000,000.
Note that the last Witch officially burned to death in North America was Josephina Arista who was burned to death by the catholic church, aided by the Mexican Police, in Ojinaga, Mexico on July 3, 1955.

UNICORN-- Originally the old wild bull (bos primegensis) which was untamable and dangerous. The early Israelites used the unicorn as a symbol of anything that didn't submit to god's will. The Babylonians would then illustrate this animal in profile with one horn hiding the other and so it came to be described as a single horned animal.
By the 1300's the Bos had been hunted to extinction (the last known animal being killed in Germany around 1350) and the medieval bards used it as a symbol of chastity, illustrating it as a cloven-hoofed antelope with a goat's beard and single horn. By modern times it was being illlustrated as a horse with a single horn.
In the 1920's a German biologist experimented with removing the horn buds from an immature calf and grafting them together onto the forehead of that calf. He discovered that the single horn bud would grow roughly straight in it's new location and the calf, possessing one large horn, would become more aggressive than it's normal fellows.
In the 1970's the Zells of CAW produced Lancelot, the living unicorn which they claimed to have created from a goat by using a secret Egyptian breeding technique but an examination of the creature revealed that it was actually the product of the German surgical technique.

UNITARIAN-- In many parts of Amerika (spelling intentional) it is physically dangerous to be known a Witch. I have friends who have had their children taken from them, been shot at, lost their jobs, lost custody of their children and so on simply because the system desn't like to have their boat rocked. Thus many Witches have found it necessary to belong to a mainstream church in order to survive. As many of the founding fathers of America discovered the same situation, the Unitarian Church was chosen because they are the most open and tolorant church in the country. In fact, if you are a Witch and join the Unitarians, they will probably ask you to teach them about Wicca.
