JAMES I, KING-- (16-17th century) Originally King James VII of Scotland,
he later becamse James I of England. Although James originally disbelieved in
Witchcraft, his fight with Francis, Earl of Bothwell, made him a believer. James is
creditied with writing the King James Version of the Bible but he actually hired
a number of biblical scholars to create an accurate translation into English. He made two
rules, though. #1 was that the bible had to be a protestant bible and any passage that
seemed to support the catholic church had to be changed to support the protestant church
and #2, the bible had to condemn Witches whenever possible.
As an aside, when James was presented with the book and bill, he accepted the
book and tore up the bill, refusing to pay for the work he had hired these people to
perform.
James passed some of the most repressive anti-Witch laws in English history in
1604.
JEWELRY-- The Crown, Bracelet, Necklace and Cord worn by a Witch during a ritual.
JINN-- (Islam) A non-material entity that may take human form and be bound to a megickian for a set time or set of conditions. The genie in a bottle is a hold-over of the jinn.
JOAN OF ARC-- ( 15th century) Born in France, she was unusual in that she
was a woman who raised an army to fight the British. She was even more unuisual in
that she won often enough to become beloved by almost everyone. There are over 4,000
works written about Joan who was later to be cannonized a saint by the catholic church.
Witchcraft claims her for one of our own as she received her education from the
fairies under a tree used by Witches during their rites. She never used the word 'god' but
preferred to say 'My Lord'. She received her mission to free France from a naked man
whom she met at the Fairies Tree. She did magick and used divination to win her battles
both on and off the battlefield. And she had a reputation as a Witch long before the
British burned her as a Witch in 1431.
Her execution was unusual as the English hanged Witches and had she been
simply a French soldier, they would have shot or hanged her. But when taken to the pyre,
the hangman set the fire to burn her clothes off, then he lowered the flames so that the
crowd could see her naked body and watch her die slowly, then he burned her body in a
manner that was un-English like but common in France for Witches. She was 20 years
old when she died.
JOSHIA, KING-- King of Israel in the 7th century b.c.e., he is famous for
forcing the Israelites to stop worshipping the Goddess around 621 b.c.e.
Around 586 b.c.e. when Babylon conquered Israel, many Israelites considered this
as a sign of the ineffectualness of jehovah who didn't protect them from conquest and the
power of the Goddess who did when She had Temples. Many Israelites then returned to
Her worship.
JUJU-- (West Africa) See fetish.
