NARCOTIC-- Any of the herbs that induce sleep or a coma-like state.

NATURE-- The system of things on Earth of which we are a part.

NATURAL MAGICK-- See Nature Magick.

NATURE MAGICK-- The system of magick that focuses on the energies of the Earth, Sun and Moon and uses simple materials found locally.

NECKLACE-- The jewelry worn by female Witches as a sign of Initiation and as a symbol of rebirth. It should be designed with Wiccan concepts which I won't describe here.

NECROMANCY-- Magick, generally of an informational form, that concerns the dead. Talking to the dead is easy, getting them to answer is the hard part.

NECRONOMICON-- A fictional book invented by H. P. Lovecraft in his Ctulhu mythos. He, and other writers are prone to quote passages from the work and as a result someone is supposed to have collected every referance to the work and then filled in the spaces, thus publishing a Necronomicon. If so, I would love to have a copy. Ed Slater has published The Necronomicon, a book based on Sumerian magick for popular use. I still havn't decided if it is a complete or only a partial hoax. I even had a discussion with one student who had had an affair with a vampire who was convinced that the Necronomicon was a real and dangerous work.
Incidently, I admit to being a Necronommie which is like a Trekkie only we collect copies (real or fake) and other material related to the Necronomicon.

NEED FIRE-- A fire produced by friction and used to light a Bonfire at Beltane when steel was forbidden.

NEMI, LAKE-- An Italian lake and the location of an important temple to the Goddess Diana. It is called 'Diana's Mirror' because of the way it reflects the Full moon.

NEOLITHIC-- The 'new stone age' when man was using complex stone tools. This is when Wicca first appeared.

NEO-PAGAN-- Someone who belongs to one of the modern recreations of ancient religions.

NEOPHYTE-- See novice.

NEW AGE-- That series of complex religious movements of which Wicca is a part. Some christian churches are new-age because they see the value of adopting the concepts of freedom and psychics into their belief system.

NEW MOON-- The time when the Moon shows no face. A time of introspection and inner workings .

NEWBEE-- Someone who is brand new to the Craft and is trying so hard to be accepted by the older and more experienced people that you can't decide if you should hug them or laugh at their efforts.

NORTH BERWICK WITCHES-- See Bothwell.

NORTHWAY-- In Wicca, refers to travelling Widdershins within the Circle.

NOVEMBER EVE-- See Samhain.

NOVICE-- That 'degree' which allows the new Wiccan to learn the Craft before actually being Initiated. Few Covens have a Novice Degree but refer to new people as Novices.

NUMBERS-- One day my youngest daughter, Cerridwen, came to me from the catholic school that her mother forced her to attend (she kept trying to get kicked out like her brother did because they want her to quote the party line and not her own opinion) and asked that if the catholic church is as bad as I say, why is it the largest religion in the world? This from a school that gave one column in its history books to the Vietnam War which was a major turning point in American history. I replied that this info, like most that they teach her, was false. (NOTE: The wife of my insurance salesman was a certified Art teacher who, being catholic, wanted to teach art at a local catholic schol. The school told her that they would hire her to teach, not art, but math. She replied that she wasn't qualified to teach math and they said it was that or nothing. She spent a semester calling me on the phone, reading to me the book and having me explain the material to her and tell her how to teach it to her class. And this is the kicker... I am dyslexic and still count on my fingers.) In reality, according to my Almanac, Buddhism is the largest religion in the world, Hinduism the second largest, islam the third largest and christianity, including baptists, mormons, catholics, etc was only the fourth largest religion. Also islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. The Institute for the Study of American Religion is said to have found that Witchcraft is the fastest growing religion in America (based on 'conversion' and not births). Cerridwen has since still not learned to shut her mouth in class despite her inheriting my obnoxiousness and her mothers stubborn streak.

NUMEROLOGY-- The science of using the relationship between letters and numbers to determine psychological traits and future influences upon the individual. This is based upon the fact that older languages such as Hebrew and Latin had no numbers and so used letters to indicate a number (Rome used I-1, V=5, X=10 etc). This all names could be reduced to a single number which was symbolic and representative. There are three major numerologic systems, the Hebrew, the Modern and the Celtic.
According to numerology, simply by changing the spelling of your name, you can make profound changes in your life. For example, I was born Richard Lee Johnson Junior but dropped the Junior when I became an adult and in all Craft matters I used the name Rik Johnson. When my coven broke up, I changed my name to Rick Johnson. If you wish to send me a numerological chart of me, please feel free to do so.
