The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Cycling Club was created in Fall of 2001 and is an official student organization of the university. UWGB Cycling Club's mission is to promote cycling among minorities and women, who are very low in numbers (African Americans 9%, Hispanics 8%, Asians 3%, Women 11% of USAC membership), but our program is open to anyone who is willing to wear our jersey and ride a bike. We believe that cycling should be accessible to anyone, and it should also be fun.

I served as the club treasurer and created the logo you see on this page.  The logo was first used on our club flyer and approved by the University Marketing and Communications department, a first for student organizations.  An internet version of our club flyer with can be accessed by clicking here.

People always ask me why I ride.  I never know what to say but Lance Armstrong put it best when commenting on the Tour De France: "There is no reason to attempt such a feat of idiocy, other than the fact that some people, that is to say some people like me, have a need to search the depths of their stamina for self-definition. (I'm the guy who can take it.) It's a contest in purposeless suffering. But for reasons of my own, I think it may be the most gallant athletic endeavor in the world. To me, of course, it's about living."

Over the summer of 2001 I traveled 2,496 miles.  That is roughly the distance from Milwaukee to Boston, south to Jacksonville.  I rode the miles on my Trek 700, a bike built in Waterloo, Wisconsin.

Pictured on the left is my trusty Trek the day of my first metric century.  I rode 109 kilometers the day after Thanksgiving in 38 degree weather.

Given the climate of Wisconsin it is often difficult to establish a work out schedule.  However, to train for cycling I used the following training schedule over winter thanks to the help of a indoor trainer and treadmill.

Sunday: 90 minutes on bike, 30+ miles
Monday: Recovery Day
Tuesday: 30 minutes on treadmill
Wednesday: 60 minutes on bike, 20+ miles
Thursday: 30 minutes on treadmill
Friday: 30 minutes on bike, intervals 11+ miles
Saturday: 120 minutes on bike, 40+ miles

Food And Nutritional Health
For a class project I was assigned to keep track of food intake and exercise.  I built a spreadsheet program to display my cycling times.  It is in excel format and can be viewed by clicking here.

Over the course of the semester my average fat in take was 15 grams a day. On an average day I ate 9 servings of fruit and consumed nearly 450 grams of carbohydrates and 79 grams of protein. My resting heart rate fell from 54 to 42 beats a minute.
