Severe
Attack on St Anthony Monastery
Complete
Report for the events of the 19th of August 2003
In
the complete silence of the red sea desert where the ancient monastery
of St. Anthony the Great is located. In this serene desert where
you cannot hear a single sound but the sound of prayers and beats
of bells praising the Lord and asking him for peace to every soul
on earth.
In this calm and peaceful atmosphere and at about 5:40 am on the
19th of August 2003, the monks of St. Anthony's Monastery , about

All
these troops were sent to break and destroy the outer wall surrounding
the monastery, according to instructions and directions from the
Governor of Hurgada, who claimed that he has permissions from
higher authorities to knock down the walls of the monastery!!!

And
according to the Governor's directions , the Egyptian Police has
closed the road leading to the monastery from Koraymat to Zaafrana,
and all entrances to this road , also they closed the Suez road
for 5 hours!!
Monks didn't know what to do in front of all these armed troops
, and when they tried to know what's going on, they were informed
that they have instructions to put down the walls of the monastery
and they were attempting to knock it down!!!

|
The
monks tried to resist by carrying signs containing protesting
statements against the attack and some of them went quickly to
the churches praying and kneeling before the Lord to help them..
, while the workers in the monastery started throwing the cars
and buses with rocks. The monks threatened to mount the walls
of the monastery and be buried under its crash!! The Police in
return threatened that they will put the walls down no matter
if they had to kill all the monks, and bury them under its crushed
bricks and threatened as well to use tear gases to spread the
protesting monks!!!

The
situation was getting serious that Bishop Yostos , the head of
the Monastery, has prayed over all monks to be ready to die, and
three monks were arrested during the protest!!
Monks were ready to use their bodies as shields to prevent the
police forces from attacking the walls of the monastery!!

Later
on, and after deadly efforts from His Highness Bishop Yostos in
contacting every authority in the country , sending emergency
calls and faxes to the President of Egypt to take actions , the
Police forces received orders to stop attacking the monastery
and the monks but forces where still surrounding the monastery
with their cars, buses and bulldozers, till at about 2:00 pm the
troops retreated to Zaafarana waiting for further orders!!!
In the mean time, today 21st of August 2003, we are waiting for
the results and out comings of the meeting held between Bishop
Yostos and the government , in the presence of the governor of
Hurgada, the cause of all the problems!!
