BESIDE THE SEASIDE A Tribute to Benny Hill Selected Works from the Skegness School of Art Times change and we now travel the world, economy class for most of us, however we ancients who grew up in Britain after WWII would , I reckon, have fond if rose tinted memories of the annual seaside holidays. The one essential to a British summer holiday was RAIN, LOTSA RAIN and what better way to forget the rain than to walk along the prom and look at the postcards on display in the numerous gift shops. It's always seemed to me that the late Benny Hill's humour was very much in the saucy postcard style, rude but not filthy, so to Benny and to the chap that wrote " A Merry Christmas To All Our Readers" on the lavatory wall, thanks Prior to migrating to Australia in 1963 I worked for what is now British Telecomm most of my time was spent in the main exchange in Leicester, in Free lane until it closed down and then in Wharf Street. In Free Lane there was a huge collection of 'dirty' postcards. These had accumulated over the years as most people sent one back when on holiday. When things were quiet happy moments could be spent browsing the collection |
OK, ON WITH THE SHOW Most of the saucy postcards tend to be sexist focusing on the attributes of the fair sex but the classic ones featured the putting down of already downtrodden little men ( with the obligatory red noses ) by rather large ladies. Here's a couple of art objects in this vein. |
How about a visit to the that lap of luxury, the doctor's waiting room where we do
a bit of peeping |
Well as the actress said to the bishop, "It's only natural" |
Time to catch up with some bosom friends |
Finally a trip to the country and a little bit of historical culture |
