The Reddigans of Calvert (Caplin Bay), Newfoundland

Third Generation

6. Michael Reddigan (Richard Reddigan , Martin ) was born about 1828 in Caplin Bay, NF. He died 1 on 12 Aug 1892 in Caplin Bay, NF. The cause of death was general debility. He was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.

Michael married Catherine Whelan daughter of John Whelan about 1863. Catherine was born about 1842. She died 1 on 26 Jan 1915 in Caplin Bay, NF. She was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.

Some of the family had the understanding that Catherine was from the Torbay area however, her Vital Statistics death record says she was born at Caplin Bay. Their is no other evidence to prove or disprove which location was her actual birthplace.

They had the following children:

+ 9 F i Catherine Joseph Reddigan
10 M ii Richard Reddigan was born about 1865 in Caplin Bay, NF. He died in the sea. The cause of death was drowning.

According to family tradition, this Richard Reddigan was lost at sea. No record has been found to support this family lore. We know he existed since he is mentioned in the will of Richard Reddigan in 1872 as one of the eldest sons of Michael Reddigan.
+ 11 M iii John Reddigan
12 M iv Joseph Reddigan "Jose" was born about 1870 in Caplin Bay, NF. He died 1 on 2 Apr 1906 in Caplin Bay, NF. The cause of death was pulmonary TB. He was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.

A story told by Tom Reddigan about 1983 relates that his Uncle Jose died after a voyage to the icefields (i.e. seal hunting). Apparently he had mistakenly taken a clothes bag belonging to someone else and didn't discover this until he was at the icefields. The clothes that were in the bag didn't fit him properly and he caught a severe cold. His death certificate states he died from pulmonary tubercolosis, however it is possible that it may have been pneumonia or the severe cold may have hastened his inevitable death from tubercolosis.
+ 13 M v Michael Reddigan
+ 14 F vi Alice Anne Reddigan
15 F vii Johanna Mary Reddigan was born about Jan 1875 in Caplin Bay, NF. She was christened 1 on 23 Jan 1875 in Holy Trinity Parish, Ferryland, NF. She died 2 on 1 Nov 1896 in Caplin Bay, NF. The cause of death was consumption. She was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.

8. Bridget Reddigan "Biddy" (Richard Reddigan , Martin ) was born 1 in Aug 1838 in Caplin Bay, NF. She died in Sep 1930 in Calvert, NF. She was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.

Bridget married 1 Martin Reddigan son of Michael Reddigan and Bridget Cody on 14 Jan 1875 in Holy Trinity Parish, Ferryland, NF. Martin was born 2 about 1837 in Fermeuse, NF. He died 3 on 1 Aug 1902 in Caplin Bay, NF. He was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.

A Martin Reddigan is mentioned as living in Caplin Bay in 1869 and is recorded several times in the earliest surviving marriage and birth records. He eventually married his "cousin" Bridget Redigan in 1875. It is not known for certain where he came from, or with whom he lived prior to his marriage. Since he must to be from a separate family, the only reasonable conclusion is that he was the son of Michael and Bridget (Cody) Reddigan of Admiral's Cove, Fermeuse. Based on the Fermeuse Voter's List, it appears that Michael Reddigan probably died when Martin was only about 13 years old.

I have read an article re the Johnston family in which it states that Richard Reddigan and Jane (Johnston) Reddigan reared up "Mike Joe" Reddigan. However, Mike Joe, Martin's son, was 27 years old when his father died in 1902, and his mother, Bridget, didn't die until about 1930. This leads me to believe there may be confusion with the correct generation, and it was probably Martin that lived with Richard and Jane Reddigan. The fact that Martin was willed the Crown land that had actually been granted in the name of Richard Reddigan Jr., suggests that he may have been "adopted" by Richard and Jane.

Although he was probably born in Admiral's Cove, Fermeuse, his death record stated that he was born at Caplin Bay, which is very unlikely.

They had the following children:

+ 19 M i Michael Joseph Reddigan
+ 20 F ii Catherine Frances Reddigan
21 M iii Richard John Reddigan was born about Jul 1879 in Caplin Bay, NF. He was christened 1 on 20 Jul 1879 in Holy Trinity Parish, Ferryland, NF. He died 2 on 2 Jul 1914 in Caplin Bay, NF. The cause of death was heart disease. He was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.
22 M iv Martin Joseph Reddigan was born about Feb 1882 in Caplin Bay, NF. He was christened 1 on 22 Feb 1882 in Holy Trinity Parish, Ferryland, NF. He died young in Caplin Bay, NF. He was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.
