Civil War reenacting is not for everyone. The clothing we wear at an event are not
costumes, but are uniforms made in the same fashion as those worn by soldiers during the war.
These uniforms, along with weapons and accouterments will be worn at events
in the winter and summer. The unit cooks over an open fire with period cookware,
and sleep in period tents.
New recruits must first be voted onto probation. All new recruits must be on probation
for one year. During this time you will need to attend a few events while gathering
equipment. After one year the company will take a vote to make the new recruit an
active member. If done, the new member will be given voting rights.
Basic equipment will cost approximately $1,000.
New recruits are not expected to just run out and buy everything at once. Most
current members are veteran reenactors and have extra uniforms and equipment.
You may borrow items from other members until you can find your own.
The Danville Grays are a member of Longstreet's Corps. This is a Corps based in
Virginia consisting of several other units also. Our current annual
dues are $25, which includes insurance through the Corps.
