22-02-09: Heath Ledger's family gave a tribute to their late son/brother on his win for best supporting actor in The Dark Knight. In a surprise move, the Academy DID NOT show his image on the screen of memorials.
Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner of the night, scoring 8 Oscars. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button came in second with three.
See the complete list of winners HERE.
I will have more updates tomorrow, however the TRIVIA section should be finished tonight. Aside from that, take care and check out the reviews of this year's nominees!
03-02-09: I have now seen all five best picture nominees: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, my latest review, #236 The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire. The Best Picture, out of all five, is... Slumdog Millionaire.
Slumdog was just fast and thrilling, suspenseful and... well, just fun to watch. It's a shame none of it's actors were nominated, but it is still a wonderfully uplifting film that will make you want to stand up and cheer.
30-01-09: I have finished my review of what will probably become the best picture of the year: #235 Slumdog Millionaire.
A suspensful, rags-to-riches drama of life on the streets of Mumbai, India, Jamal recounts his life while trying to win Rs. 20,000,000 (rupees). It is the best film of the year.
24-01-09: Make that three Best Picture nominees of 2008 that I have now seen and reviewed! I took in #234 Milk. It tells the story of the first openly gay politician in the United States. It deals with the events of his rise to power and his untimely death and the influence he had on the Gay Rights movement in America. Sean Penn's amazing turn as the title character, Milk, is likely to bring him his second Oscar.
23-01-09: I have now seen two of the five Best Picture Nominees and four of the top eight films (by number of nominations). My latest review is #233 Frost/Nixon. A taught thriller, Frank Langella (who really doesn't look like Nixon) sounds like him and play the part extremely well.
22-01-09: The 2008 Academy Award Nominations have been announced! In my humble opinion the biggest news was that Meryl Streep picked up her FIFTEENTH NOMINATION, this one for her work on the film Doubt.
Leading the way is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with 13 nominations including one for lead actor Brad Pitt. Following that is the front-runner Slumdog Millionaire with 10 nods. Milk, the biopic of a gay politician took 8 nods as well. All were nominated for Best Picture.
The Dark Knight garnered 8 nominations including one for the late Heath Ledger. If he wins or not, we will find out in late February. The gutless academy ONCE AGAIN fell short of giving a film the top honor it deserves and denied The Dark Knight a nomination for Best Picture. The two other films nominated were The Reader (5 nods) and Frost/Nixon (5 nods). The latter received a nod for it's leading actor, Frank Langella, who doesn't look anything like Richard Nixon, but sure sounds like him.
Once again, the Academy only picked three songs in the "Best original Song" Category. Is this to save time during the ceremony? Who knows. Anyway, Two songs from Slumdog Millionaire and one from Wall•E were nominated. Wall•E also took another five nominations for a total of 6.
Some surprises: both Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio were NOT nominated for there work on Revolutionary Road; Kate won the Golden Globe for this role. However, Kate was nominated for The Reader.
Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for his work on Tropic Thunder as a white man who has surgery to become a black man for a part in a movie. He got a supporting nod. Troubled actor Mickey Rourke was nominated after his Golden Globe win for his role in The Wrestler, as was his co-star, Marisa Tomei.
You can see all the nominees at the IMDB THE 2008 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS.
11-01-09: After last year's "press conference" debacle, The 66th annual Golden Globes went off swimmingly last night. Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner picking up all four awards it was nominated for: Director, Score, Screenplay and, of course, picture.
The big news of the night was Heath Ledger winning for his role in The Dark Knight. He was given a moving tribute by Chris Nolan (who directed him).
Kate Winslet won two Globes (for Actress in a Drama, Revolutionary Road, and Supporting Actress for The Reader).
Mickey Rourke won an emotional Best Actor in a Drama award for The Wrestler. He thanked several people and was blacked out by NBC for calling some people "sons of bitches". He ended by thanking his many, many dogs. "It's been a very long road back for me. Several years ago I was almost out of this business. I'd like to thank all my dogs. Sometimes when a man's alone his dogs are all he's got."
Other winners included Vicky Christina Barcelona for best Comedy, Colin Farrel for In Bruges (Comedy), Sally Hawkins for Happy-Go-Lucky (Comedy), Bruce Springsteen for his song "The Wrestler" from The Wrestler, and Wall•E for best animated feature.
You can see the complete list of winners here, at The Internet Movie Database.
08-01-09: Huzzah! Another review is up. Brad Pitt stars as man growing younger in #232, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. An epic along the lines of Forrest Gump, Pitt brings the title character to life in an Oscar worthy performance.
02-01-09: I have finally done another review, #231. This one is of Valkyrie, Tom Cruise's new film about the attempted assassination of adolph hitler.
#1 All Quiet on the Western Front, #5 The Bridge on the River Kwai, #10 Rocky,
#13 Lilo & Stitch, #25 A Streetcar Named Desire, #27 Star Wars Episode II,
#50 Dances With Wolves, #75 Dr. No, #100 High Noon, #150 Finding Neverland,
