Sean Connery, who made the role of James Bond famous, started the franchise off with a bang here in Dr. No. James bond is on his way to Jamaica to find out what happened to a British operative and his secratary. It seems that the Americans are having problems with thier rockets launching from Cape Canaveral, and it is suspected that the mysterious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) and SPECTRE are behind the devious plot...
Dr. No, at times, moves slow. The introduction James Bond is quick but works well. Although we don't get to see Desmond Llewellyn as Q, we do get a taste of what's instore in the next Bond picture. And of course, we have Cubby Broccoli to thank for all of this. (Bond flicks just aren't the same without him.)
This is the first James Bond film, and the effects that make a James bond film a Jame Bond film (the pre-credits teaser, the main song, Q) don't really start untill From Russia with Love, but we do have the gadgets, the James Baond Theme (Da-da Da-da Da-da da...) the action and the women (who can forget Honey Ryder [Ursula Andress] comming out of the water on the beach? For 1962 standards, that was pretty riskč). But, Dr. No would start the trend of having hot women for bond to interact with.
Although it is not my favourtie Bond, I do like it. I wish that Broccoli and Saltzman had started the series with Casino Royal, but beggers can't be choosers.
Plot:
This is not the most action packed James Bond, but it does have it's moments... and we get Ursula Andress.
Visual Effects:
Not as good as later Bond films, but decent.
Sound:
As always, with every James Bond film, the songs and score are exceptionally well done.
Character Development:
Atmosphere:
There is no opening "teaser" in Dr. No, but we are reeled in by the pan up to Sean Conney's face, the lighting of the cigarette, and the now famous line "Bond. James Bond."
Realism:
Warren’s Rating:
Is the movie worth your time to watch?
