Edward Stephenson was christened in the parish of All Saints, Newcastle on 17 August 1806. He was the third of five known children to Edward and Dorothy Stephenson. His siblings were Francis (c.1801), Jane (c.1804), Henry (c.1809) and George (c.1811). He later married Hannah Pitt and they had six children; Edward, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, William and Robert. The family is listed in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census as living in Dog Bank, Newcastle. He is listed in the 1851 census as being forty-three years old, suggesting a birth in 1807/8. The 1861 census records him as fifty-four years old, suggesting a birth in 1806/7. I believe that the Edward Stephenson christened on 17 August 1806 in All Saints, Newcastle is the same Edward Stephenson who later married Hannah Pitt. This is possible if he was born after April and before August 17th, 1806. This would make him fifty-four at the time of the April 1861 census, with his fifty-fifth birthday approaching. Edward is listed as a hairdresser in one of the census returns and a furniture broker in the others. Two of his sons had followed him into hairdressing. I don't know when he died. |
