CANCER (the crab)

• The most prominent features are adaptability, tenacity, and patience; once an object has been seized, he takes possession and, like the crab, would rather lose a claw than let go. This tendency is carried through from possessions to loved ones and ideas.
• A master of many moods, forever constant in his inconsistency. He can feel, and make others feel, joy, sorrow, horror, and compassion.
• No other type can despair as can Mr. Cancer, whose vivid imagination can take hold of any emotion and intensify it.
• His memory is strong and retentive, the past very real to him - a great importance is placed on the history of his family, nation, or religion.
• Dramatic by nature, he enjoys an audience and is attracted to a career that can suply one, however small - the schoolroom in many cases will fulfill this need - but when this is denied, his friends and family are resorted to for this purpose.
• Affections are deep and lasting, no distance or period of time can lessen the family ties or dim a friendship.
• When he becomes a family man with a son, this bond will be a close one jealously guarded by the subject, and will prove his inspiration on many occasions.
• It is natural for this man to revolve his entire career and life around his loved ones; until this gap in his life is filled he may feel incomplete and will drift along influenced by everyone and everything around him.
• Unsympathetic discipline generally causes him intense suffering, and in any case proves quite useless for he follows his own will, if not openly, then in secret, and the resentment aroused in him may distort his loving disposition against the disciplinarian.
• His imagination craves constant nourishment and shows itself in the love of history, books, drama, and the cinema. When starved of these stimuli, he will become totally illogical and willful.
• Because of his sensitivity, everything pertaining to his family is keenly felt and domestic ties can act as a kind of brake on the individual's progress.
• Loneliness is avoided whenever possible, his natual inclinations leading him into a clan or sect of sorts. The approval of others is eagerly sought and a fear of ridicule binds him closely to convention.
• His ambition takes an unusual form for it is a love of fame and recognition that he seeks; this desire for power can lead to a high position which, once attained, is tenaciously clung to. It is rare for a Cancer man to fall from the top once he reaches it.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HIGHER FEMALE

• This female shares all the vices and virtues of her brother, adding them the ability to make an excellent mother, a maternal instinct being very much to the fore of her personality.
• If, however, she should be frustrated in this essential part of her character, it could lead to withdrawal into her own dream world, a senseless drifting from one relationship to another, or she may become a drag on her family and friends, leaning heavily on her their time and energy.
• Miss Cancer is for the most happiest when married at an early age for only in close partnership can she truly fulfill herself.
• She frequently turns to food for compensation and is, as a result, prone to overweight.
• Although her protective shell is desperately needed to assist her to survive the harder blows in life, she must try not to retire too deeply into it for there is a danger in that few human creatures possess the patience needed to coax her out.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LOWER TYPE

• The lower individual becomes a slave rather than a master to his moods.
• He over-indulges in sentimentalism, sensationalism and exaggerated emotion of every kind and is a bundle of contradictions and inconsistencies.
• His own importance is blown all out of proportion, losing the sympathy and the friendship of others.
• This type must attract attention no matter to what extremes he may have to go; as a notorious hypochondriac, health can sometimes be effectively used to achieve this end.
• Fierce pride and independence alternate with helplessness and loneliness, there are weeks when he avoids his fellow men while he indulges in bouts of self-pity, morbid thoughts and depressions, from which he eventually emerges only to resume his attempt to attract the limelight for himself.
• When badly afflicted, his sexual desires can become masochistic.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

• In structure, the Cancer subject's frame is large and bony, arms are long in proportion to the body, feet and hands tend to be big and the skull is generous with a pronounced jaw.
• The mouth is wide, expressing clearly all the emotions.
• The nose as a rule is turned-up, eyes are wide apart - often shortsighted - and the eyebrows have a distinct downward curve.
• The stomach and breasts are ruled by this sign and much attention needs to be paid to diet if irritations are to be avoided.
• Worry can result in indigestion which may in turn produce defective circulation, and a tendency to always fear the worst does not help the subject.
• An over-active imagination inclines this type to vivid nightmares.
