History of Service 14 December 1938 Laid down as passenge liner YAWATA MARU. 31 October 1939 Launched 31 May 1942 Commissioned after converted into a escort carrier. July 1942 Name changed to UNYO 1942 ~ 1944 Shipment of supplies and aircraft throughout this period. November 1943 Became part of a task force led by ZUIHO. She had about 20 US POWs aboard. 4 December 1943 Task force was attacked by submarine USS Sailfish. CHUYO sank during the attack. January 1944 Hit by four torpedos from submarine USS Haddock, but was able to reach Saipan for emergency repair. Then escorted with TAKAO and returned to Yokosuka for major repair. August 1944 Escort convoy HI-73. 17 September 1944 Hit by two torpedos from submarine USS Barb near Hong Kong while escorting convoy HI-74. Unable to save her due to bad weather condition, she listed to starboard and sank. |
