History of Service 9 May 1938 Laid down as passenger liner NITTA MARU. 20 May 1939 Launched July 1942 Required by the Navy and began convertion into a escort carrier. 25 November 1942 Commissioned December 1942 ~ December 1943 Ferrying supplies, military equipments throughout this period, most of the time she was accomplied with TAIYO. April 1943 Attacked by submarine USS Tunny, but no damage. September 1943 The TAIYO was hit by a torpedo from USS Cabrilla, the CHUYO towed her to Yokosuka for repair. 4 December 1943 While CHUYO was in a task force with ZUIHO, UNYO, MAYA and other destroyers, she was hit by a torpedo fired from submarine USS Sailfish. She was able to proceed, and steam back to Japan, but about 6 hours later she was further hit by two torpedos and went dead in water. Despite all the aid given by the accompanying ships, she was once again hit by two more torpedos. She quickly rolled over and sank. Among the victims were 20 US POWs aboarded the ship.
