Meditation
Mind
Mind
can be defined as an ability of a person to be aware or conscious
of things and to think and reason; a person's attention, remembrance,
intention, or opinion and sanity.
In
modern times Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939, the Austrian founder
of psychoanalysis, advanced our knowledge tremendously with
his research into mind processes and with his psychoanalytic
concepts.
Subconscious
Mind
You
have only one mind, but your mind possesses two distinctive
characters. The line of demarcation between the two is well
known to almost all men and women today. The two functions
of your mind are essentially unlike. Each is endowed with
separate and distinct attributes and powers. The nomenclature
generally used to distinguish the two functions of your mind
is as follows: The objective and the subjective mind and the
objective, the conscious and the subconscious mind, the surface
and deep self, the outer and the inner self, the outer and
the inner mind, the voluntary and the involuntary mind, the
male and female, and many other terms.
The
subconscious has also been called the “subliminal”,
the “soul”, the “psyche”, the “inner
voice”, the “spirit” and by various other
terms.
Meditation
Meditation as per dictionary means, “thinking deeply
and quietly”. Some scholars feel, “Meditation
is quite similar to self-hypnosis”. Others have mentioned
“Meditation and self-hypnosis are the same”. And
I think the true meaning of meditation extends beyond those
opinions. Meditation is an inner method for working with the
mind. It is not religious practice. Meditation involves applying
a series of systematic steps to produce certain desirable
and helpful changes in one’s state of consciousness,
which is called an altered state of consciousness. Meditation
is a method whereby a person reaches an altered state of consciousness,
deeper levels of mind, alpha state, theta state, subconscious
or whatever you can call it.
Meditation
as described here is distinct from the common meaning of meditation
as process of pondering or ruminating on some topic. “Meditation”
is the English equivalent of the Sanskrit word “Dhyana”
this term is clearly and very specifically defined in the
number of classical yoga texts. The ancient yogis, who achieve
self-development, carefully systemized, Studied and described
the practice of meditation. One of the clearest descriptions
of meditation can be found in the “Yoga Sutras”
of Patanjali, a classical text on yoga practices.

Note:
Opinions
expressed on this page must be viewed as the ideas of an ordinary
student of meditation. While I truly believe
everything I say, you should not believe anything unless you
see it, feel it, and know it for yourself. I make no claims
of infallibility. In fact I absolutely claim fallibility.
*
Remember that meditation is an escape to
reality, not an escape from reality. Avoid
any guru or group that asks you to deny truth. Take the best
and leave the rest.
* Don't limit yourself to just one teacher. It will always
be better to know different ideas before reaching any conclusion
or that what we call bilateral thinking,
always see things from different angle, different perspective.
The single guru approach can lead to cult thinking with its
small mindedness and us vs. them syndrome.
It
is a mind that is unprejudiced by religion, philosophy, and
cultural conditioning. It is going naked in the stars.
