NEWS AND COMMENTS
The end of '98
![]() | 31 December - One the last day of the year, check the list of the tournaments where
Dominique will play early next year. Right now she is practising together with her doubles
partner Flo in Argentina (of course, if they haven't left to Australia already...) So,
congratulations to all the fans - new season will start already on Monday!!! Good luck to
Dominique and all the other favourites of ours, and of course, to all the fans! May it be
the best year ever for all of us!
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() | 22 December - Dominique was voted "Sportswoman of the Year" in Belgium! Congrats, Dominique! You really deserved this!
![]() | 16 December - Thanks to my friend Geert from Belgium I can inform you about some more great Dominique news: it appears that last week she played a tournament in le Touquet. It seemed to be a small tournament in which the semis were Julie Halard against Amelie Mauresmo and Dominique against someone more or less unknown name (I'm sorry I really didn't get the name), but anyway, Dominique won that semi 6-0 6-1 in just 45 minutes and she met Julie Halard in final. But as it seemed to be a really small tournament (btw, Dominique had won it in 1996 as it was mentioned in French TV news) there was no more information about the result of the final - but anyway, at least we know that she has reached another final this year! Great news! (Thanks a lot, Geert, for informing me!)
![]() | 16 December - There is another title or trophy to get for Dominique as she is nominated for "Trophy 40-15" which will be given to the player having the best results this year during the biggest tennis exhibition in Belgium this Saturday, December 19th. It will be a charity exchibition, dedicated to fight against AIDS and cancer, and the 20 Top players of Belgium will take part in this event in tennisclub RTC Binchois. Last year the trophy was given to Justine Henin, but this time Dominique has quite good chances to get it!!! So all the fans who have the chance go there and watch the matches - all the best Belgians are playing there - including Dominique, of course!!! [Lucky you!! ;-)] (In case you need some contact details, don't hesitate to e-mail me...)
![]() | 16 December - Although official WTA season is over for this year, there are some more great objectives for Dominique to achieve: as she said after reaching Top 10, next great dream for her is to become "The Sportswoman of the Year" in Belgium! And she really has the best chances to get this title this time! The winner will be known in December 21st, so not so long to wait anymore! Let's hope for the best!!!
![]() | 20 November - The magnificant 1998 season is over. Dominique lost the quarterfinal against Irina Spirlea 2-6 3-6. Spirlea played really really well and as Dominique didn't happen to have one of her best days on court, there were not so many chances for her. But I'm sure she is still delighted about what she has achieved this year and during this last tournament of a year - as she said before the Masters started - already qualifying to play in Chase Championships is fantastic achievement, so she wasn't so worried about the results - and now her Chase record is 1-1, not so bad for a start! So now she will have some rest and hopefully the next year starting with tournament in Auckland will be as great as all of her fans saw in this year!
![]() | 19 November - So, tonight Dominique will step on court again in Madison Square Garden to play the second match in Masters. It will be against Irina Spirlea, who actually wasn't the "first choice" for Dominique - she would have preferred to play against Arantxa instead, but well, there aren't any easy matches in this tournament anyway... Dominique's head to head record against Spirlea is quite frightening, but well, the first of those losses came quite early in Dominique's career - comparing where she is now - so it's not so relevant now. And match in Rome was played on clay with isn't the best surface for Dominique, and of course, during their recent meeting Dominique had problems with abdominal strain which was bothering her again after a while... So, let's still hope the best - if she manages to play as good as she did on Monday and avoid at least some of those double faults, there are great chances to revenge all those losses from previous meetings. So go on, Dominique, your fans believe in you!!! |

![]() | 17 November - Dominique was victorious in her first ever appearance at Chase Championships yesterday, defeating 7th seed Conchita Martinez in straight sets 7-6 (9-7) 6-2! Match started quite unfortunate for servers as first 4 games went against the serve, then in 5th game, Conchita finally managed to hold her serve and following 4 games went with serve quite smoothly as well... Then, at 4-5, Dominique serving for staying in the set, Conchita had three set points, but Dominique eliminated all of them with great winners and broke Conchita's next serve instead, but failed to serve out the set - so after having one setpoint they were heading to tie-break. Dominique got the early mini-break and leaded 5-2, but Conchita levelled it all up at 6-6 and 7-7. Finally Dominique was able to take advantage of the 4th setpoint and won tie-break 9-7 - the setpoint landed on the line from Dominique's winner which hitted the netcord at first... So with a bit luck she finally managed to finish it off. The second set started very good for Dominique - she broke Conchita's serve in second game and was leading 3-0, 4-1 and 5-1, but when she was serving for the second set and the match, Conchita managed to get one of the service-breaks back, but in next game Dominique broke her again to win the match in straight sets. Dominique was totally dominating in this match - hitting all the fantastic winners - both forehand and backhand winners down the line and crosscourt - whatever! But she was the one who made the mistakes as well, but it's because of her risky style - and considering that, there actually weren't so many unforced errors, maybe only in two the most important games - the ones for closing both sets... and well, Conchita was very passive and didn't even try to take advantage of Dominique's second serves. Well, in next round it will be the repeat-match of Zurich quarterfinal against Irina Spirlea who eliminated the second Spaniard Arantxa Sanchez Vicario... Hopefully Dominique will revenge this Zurich loss in style later this week! Good luck! |
![]() | 9 November - Well, no 6th final this time - Dominique lost to Steffi in three sets 1-6 6-3 0-6. The main "features" of this match were certainly Steffi's incredible slices which made Dominique to run "out of steam" - she made 12 double faults in this match, but anyway, she was the only one who could get at least one set from Steffi in Leipzig and this is also something to be proud about!!! Leipzig gave her 148 points, being the 5th best tournament of the year and putting her back on 11th spot in Race to Chase list with 1959 points. This week Dominique won't be playing - it's all about rest and preparation for Chase! All the best!!! |
![]() | 5 November - Another quite unexpected "move" from Dominique - as she played in Quebec last week, at least some of her fans didn't expect that she will return to Europe before Chase Championships, but... Well, at least this time the so called "surprise entering" of Leipzig tournament was much more success than the previous ones - Dominique, as the 3rd seed, got first round bye and defeated Iva Majoli in second round 6-4 6-4. In yesterday's quarters she defeated very good player Natasha Zvereva in three sets 6-3 3-6 6-2 (it was a great match, considering that Zvereva was very eager to win as she still has to gain some more points to qualify for Chase)!!! Great! In semi-final Dominique will meet either "The Great" Steffi Graf or qualifier Anne-Gaelle Sidot who upset Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in second round. If Dominique manages to win this next match, it will be the 6th final of the year for her! Great, all of the best for that!!! |
![]() | 5 November - The Bell Challenge didn't continue so good for Dominique as she lost in quarters to Chanda Rubin in straight sets 2-6 2-6. It seems that long and tough season is becoming quite tiresome both mentally and physically... but well, not so much left of it - some 3 more weeks, including the "pearl" of the season - Chase Championships!!! |
![]() | 29 October - The greatest news this week are that Dominique has qualified for season-ending championships - Chase Championships for a first time in her career! (Thanks, Patrick, for reminding me about this fact!) Sabine reached this event last year, but lost in first round, hopefully it will be much better for Dominique!!! And one more good news concerning Chase is that Eurosport got the agreement about showing this event! So, all the fans in Europe, take you positions in front of TV-sets - the first broadcast starts at 23:30 CET, November, 16th! |
![]() | 29 October - Bell Challenge has started quite well for Dominique - she defeated local girl Jana Nejedly in straight sets after quite tough first set 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 in second round. The quarterfinal opponent will be either "Lucky Loser" Mashona Washington or 5th seed Chanda Rubin and the match will be played tomorrow. Good start for the tournament! :-) |
![]() | 26 October - Dominique is in "action" again!!! She is the top seed in Bell Challenge in Quebec and got a first round bye. In second round she will meet either Jana Kandarr or Jana Nejedly - hopefully her tiredness and injury-threat is forgotten by now and she can continue to show the fans the exceptional tennis again! Good luck! |
![]() | 26 October - Well, unfortunately I haven't had chances to update this news and comments section for a while, but hopefully you got all the results from the main page where I tried to put the recent updates as quickly as possible. To "end" the tournament in Zurich, it has just to be mentioned that Dominique defeated Amelie Mauresmo in second round and lost to Irina Spirlea in quarters - after being totally exhausted physically because of all those tough matches she had had during the last week. This was also the reason why she withdrew from Moscow tournament as well - she just felt too tired and her old injury - abdominal strain started to bother her a bit again, but as she said - it was nothing too serious, she just needed some rest.... |
![]() | 14 October - Yesss, the successive run continues! "The Giant Killer" Dominique made Anna Kournikova so nervous before their match that Anna totally forgot how to serve and made 17 (!?!) double faults. This left Dominique into very strange situation as well, as she just didn't have a chance to settle down and get into her own rhythm either, but in the second set she sort of got used to those very unexpected "conditions" and won the match impressively 6-3 6-1! In second round she will meet Amelie Mauresmo who upset her earlier this year... hopefully it won't happen this time! |
![]() | 13 October - YESSSS!!! Dominique entered the top 10 of Corel WTA Tour this week by reaching the 9th spot becoming the first Belgian ever, man or women, to enter the top 10! She improved the doubles ranking as well, although they lost in 1st round of Filderstadt - her career high in doubles is 27th now. |
![]() | 12 October - Well, ranking news are not confirmed yet, but still it's quite sure that Dominique is ranked 9 now! Great achievement! This week the European Championships will be held in Zurich and Dominique is 8th seed there. At first look it seems that she didn't have so much luck with the draw as she will meet Anna Kournikova in first round, but if she can continue in this kind of form she had last week, she can beat everybody! So let's see how it goes... If she manages to win, the second round should be easier - against Plischke (Q) or Mauresmo and possible quarter final opponent could be Martinez.. But let's take it round by round... In doubles draw Dominique and Flo will meet Bollegraf and Graham in first round and 3rd seeds Raymond/Stubbs or Schett/Schnyder... Good luck! Haha, CBS SportsLine calls Dominique "a giant-killer" already, great! |
![]() | 10 October - Well, the great week for Dominique is over now... Sad, but true - she lost to Sandrine Testud in straight sets 2-6 0-6... so it still was too much after beating two top 5 players - and the first one among them of course... But still, it was surely the best week for Dominique this year which will put her on 9th ranking spot next week. And Top 10 place is already something!!! Next week it will be Zurich, hopefully the great form of her will continue there as well! |
![]() | 10 October - YESSSSSSSSSSSSS! History has been made! Dominique defeated the world's no. 1 player! As you already know the scoreline was 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 for Dominique! Although the main news for the world was the new number one, the Dominique fans don't consider this as so big occasion after all - well, you don't beat the no 1 every day, do you? :):):) So, in semis tonight Dominique will meet her old rival Sandrine Testud whom she beat earlier this year in Fed Cup match, so it looks quite promising - of course in case she hasn't burned out emotionally after beating Hingis! But still, now we know that you can do it - so we all hope that you can continue playing in this great form! GOOOOOOOOOOD! |
![]() | 10 October - Well, to celebrate the big occasion the big fan-meeting is taking place in Estonia today!! Okay, to tell the truth there are only two of us and this meeting was already planned in advance, but anyway - doesn't it sound great if it's presented in this way - "Big fan meeting"... Well, I have my trip companion Sakari from Finland visiting me (as a small secret - we are watching "THE MATCH" right now...) and he agreed to help me with updating the site with the main news, so here it comes: Great match, which I was able to watch from DSF. There were times, especially in the first set, when Hingis had absolutely no answers to Dominique's power!! Now she has proven to herself and everyone else she can beat anyone!! So I just came here and brought the tape to Külli and have the opportunity to update the best Dominique site in the net!!
![]() | 9 October - YESSSSSSSS! Dominique achieved her year's best win by defeating recent Grand Slam Cup winner Venus Williams in very impressive way 6-1 6-2!!! Dominique's game was described as "an outstanding performance" and she showed "exquisite timing with flat ground strokes" (thanks, Sakari, for informing me!)! Great, Dominique! Today the faith or worlds number one will be in your hands - as we all know, she has already made history by "ruining" Arantxa's great Grand Slam record, maybe now it's time to change the tennis history even more!!! Today - Dominique Vs. Martina Hingis in quarters...
![]() | 7 October - Dominique is mentioned as a "wild card" in Filderstadt, although it may sound strange as she was scheduled to play there for a long time already... strange... But anyway, the field is very tough and she was quite lucky to get comparatively easy draw for first round - she met Magui Serna and defeated her in three tough sets coming back after losing the first set 2-6 7-5 6-2! Good, Dominique!! In next round it will be Venus Williams, the 5th seed and recent Grand Slam Cup winner - so it will be very difficult match again... Hopefully Dominique plays her best tennis and will have a chance to move forward in this tournament!
![]() | 7 October - As I heard from Chris G. (thanks for informing me!), Dominique and Flo lost their first round doubles match in Filderstadt against Kournikova and Sanchez Vicario... Bad luck with the draw...
![]() | 30 September - Ranking news - another career high in doubles, this time 28th! Great! Dominique has 1027 T and 127 Q points. In singles she is 12th again with 1926 T and 735 Q points, but soon more tournaments will start and she will have a chance to improve her ranking again!
![]() | 25 September - Some more sad news - tournament in Tokyo is over for Dominique now. Together with Janette Husarova she lost the very close first round doubles match against the first seeds 5-7 5-7. So now she has a week off to recover and find her confidence again for tournament in Filderstadt.
![]() | 24 September - Sad news, Dominique lost in second round of Princess Open to Olga Barabanschikova in three close sets 6-3 3-6 5-7... So it seems, that it isn't so good idea for Dominique to surprise-enter the tournaments where she wasn't committed before - remember, how it went at Budapest tournament... Hopefully Dominique isn't too disappointed about that and can go on with her so far great year! Next up is Filderstadt - good luck for that!!
![]() | 23 September - Today should be the day when Dominique starts playing in Tokyo. Her second round opponent will be Olga Barabanschikova who defeated Miko Saeki in previous round. In doubles tournament there is many surprising teams, one of them is Dominique and Janette Husarova, which is probably so because Flo isn't playing in Tokyo at all. Unfortunately Dominique and Janette got quite an unfortunate draw as they will meet 1st seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs in first round.
![]() | 23 September - Overview about Dominique's and Sabine's commitments to different
tournaments until the end of October.
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() | 22 September - Yepp, Dominique is still playing this week - she is 4th seed in Toyota Princess Cup, tier II tournament played in Tokyo. As all 4 highest seeds got the first round bye, she will have a free day before meeting Olga Barabanschikova or Miko Saeki in second round and the possible next round opponent may be 7th seed Anke Huber.
![]() | 22 September - Great ranking news - although in doubles which isn't her main intention, it's still important - she is 30th now! A new career high! Great! Btw, something more - in Eurosport it was said yesterday that Dominique moved down in singles rankings - from 10th to 11th spot!?!?! Interesting, where they get their information from???
![]() | 18 September - Some ranking news, which actually are not so new anyway - but better later than never! So, Dominique achieved the repeating of her career best singles ranking after US Open - 11th! And she is ranked her career high in doubles as well - 31th! Great! In Race to Chase Dominique is 14th in singles and 11th in doubles - together with Flo, of course!
![]() | 7 September - So, as you all probably know already, it all didn't go so well as it looked like at first - Dominique lost the third round match against Kimberly Po 4-6 2-6. At least in my opinion the match was much closer than the numbers show, but apparently, Dominique seemed to have her "old" problem again - serving... And although she had quite a lot of breaking chances as well, she wasn't able to take the maximum out of them, unfortunately... But as Dominique had only 2 points to defend from the last years tournament, she earned a lot of them this year and there is a chance that she will be ranked 11th again next week. Good news, of course! |
Saturday, in doubles, Dominique and Flo had a tough and close match against 12th seeds Rachel McQuillan and Julie Halard-Decugis...and unfortunately Julie got a "revenge" in three very tight sets 5-7 4-6 5-7 from Dominique's/Flo's side.
![]() | 4 September - Today it will be Dominique Vs Kimberly Po on Court 11 as 3rd match! Come on, Dominique, 1/8th final and Monica Seles are waiting for you!!! Good luck! Btw, by defeating Grzybowska Dominique changed her career US Open record to 7-7 (it was 5-7 before this tournament)! |
![]() | 4 September - Well, yesterday Dominique was playing again - this time doubles with Flo. Although Dominique made some errors as well, they won in straight sets 6-3 6-4 and will meet Julie Halard-Decugis and Rachel McQuillan, 12 seeds in second round. Recently they have had some wins over higher ranked doubles teams, so let's see what will happen this time! |
![]() | 4 September - Dominique has achieved an important "milestone" in her professional career - $ 1 million in career prize money, which confirms her place among the top players! Congratulations, Dominique! (Thanks for forwarding this information goes to Sakari !!! I promised, didn't I? :):) |
![]() | 3 September - YESSSSSSSSSS! Dominique just stayed on court for only 47 minutes - she didn't need more time for 6-0 6-0 win over Poland's Magdalena Grzybowska! Yessssssssssss! It all was over so quickly... It's really great to know that there is "the old good" Dominique again, playing on courts of Flushing Meadow! Well done, Dominique! Go on like that - the next opponent will be Kimberly Po... Commentaries were very positive - "Dominique played an incredible match against Grzybowska. She wasn't even missing many serves..." |
Well, Dominique got her first defeat of tournament as well - in mixed doubles after very close match 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 4-6... Well, as Chris G. commented this one -"The result was disappointing, but it sure was a highly entertaining match. It's very nice to see Dominique smiling so much. She's always so serious and intense in singles, but obviously has lots of fun in mixed doubles." Great to hear that! And today Dominique and Flo will start their doubles action on Court 8 (Lucky court for Dominique?:) against Cara Black of ZIM and Irina Selyutina of KAZ as 5th match of the day - Good luck, girls!!!
![]() | 2 September - So, singles second round will start today - on Court 8 as 1st match - it will be Dominique Vs Magdalena! I will be here to do some "Netwatching" - so hopefully I will be able to give you the exact scores through the match. Dominique fans who are "there" will have a chance to see Dominique playing in two matches today - she will play mixed doubles as well, together with Czech David Rikl this time. They will meet Australians Kerry-Anne Guse and Andrew Kratzmann in first round - 4th match on Court 14. Good luck for both matches, Dominique!
![]() | 1 September - Yesssssss! It's my greatest pleasure to announce that Dominique won her first round match at US Open by defeating Julie Halard-Decugis in straight sets 6-2 6-2!!! And - due to quite a long matches on the same court before Dominique's match, it was re-scheduled to be played on Centre Court - so Dominique was in spotlight again! Yesss! It seems that Dominique is in form again! Hopefully she can continue like that because in second round she will meet her "old" rival Magdalena Grzybowska of Poland, who got very impressive win against Katerina Studenikova also in straight sets 6-0 6-1... Last time Dominique met Magdalena was in 1st Round of French Open and it was quite a close match (7-5 3-6 6-4), or let's say it made "Netwatching" fans quite nervous.. :-) They also met in the beginning of the year, in semi-final of Hobart where Dominique won as well in three sets 6-7 6-1 6-3... Continue like that, Dominique!
![]() | 1 September - A short news for Sabine fans - I've got to know from two different recourses (Belgian Tennisfederation and Dominique) that Sabine is very tired now and has just taken some time out... But she will be back at Filderstadt in October, so don't worry... Sabine, we all hope to see you back soon!
![]() | 31 August - So, today it will start for real! On Court 7 as 3rd match - it will be Dominique Vs Julie Halard-Decugis. Dominique has had quite a good week in doubles last week, so hopefully she got some confidence she needed before US Open! Her fans would be delighted to see her on her best again! Go on, Dominique, we are supporting you!!!
![]() | 31 August - Dominique and Flo lost the very tight semi-final against top seeds Tauziat/Fusai in three sets 6-3 3-6 6-7 - and the last set tie-break was 6-8!?! Sad news of course... but from the other side - it's so good to see that they are able to play such a great matches against one of the best double team on WTA tour!
![]() | 28 August - Some more pre-US Open news and positive ones!!! Dominique and Flo are in semis of New Haven doubles tournament! They defeated 4th seeded double of Yayuk Basuki and Caroline Vis is straight sets 6-2 6-4 and they will meet top seeds Tauziat/Fusai in semis now. Good luck, girls!
![]() | 26 August - So, the draw has been announced! - Dominique is in first quarter
(together with Martina Hingis and Monica Seles) and she is scheduled to play:
|
![]() | 26 August - Yess, at least some news about wins - Dominique and Flo won their first round doubles match in 3 sets 6-4 4-6 6-2! Hopefully it will give them some necessary confidence before US Open. Next round it will be Basuki/Vis... well, Yayuk again - hopefully it goes better this time! (Sorry, Ed...)
![]() | 25 August - Some statistics about Dominique's previous results in US Open - the best
result so far is reaching to 3rd round in her first attempt, when she won 5 matches in a
row, 3 in qualification and 2 in main draw. Last year she was defeated by Patty Schnyder
in first round - and we know now that it wasn't so easy opponent after all as Patty has
been the 2nd successive player this year by number of tournaments won. Draw will be
announced today/tomorrow (it depends on time-zone you are in). Come on, Dominique, your
fans hope you will have another great Grand Slam tournament appearance!!!
|
![]() | 25 August - US Open seeds have been announced - and Dominique is 14th seed in singles! The draw will be announced tomorrow, so let's see how much luck she has this time - last time she met Patty Schnyder in first round.... |
![]() | 25 August - Some ranking news - Dominique's singles ranking has slightly gone down - she is 13th now. And her doubles ranking is 36th. And - she is still $ 4560 short of $ 1 million mark of career prize money... |
![]() | 25 August - Sad news once again - Dominique lost to Mary Joe Fernandez, after having won the first set 6-3, she totally broke down 0-6 1-6... It's really sad to see that she haven't found her confidence again after a break... Hopefully she will have quite easy first rounds draw at US Open to get a chance to regain her confidence and self-belief. She still has a chance to improve her game in New Haven doubles - together with Flo she will meet Gorrochategui/Graham in first round and possible second round opponents could be 4th seeds Basuki/Vis... |
![]() | 24 August - New Haven draw has been announced - Dominique is 8th seed and she will face a very tough opponent in first round action - Mary Joe Fernandez... If she gets "over" the first round, the second round opponent may be Sandrine Testud ("special" opponent, of course...) and in third round...hahah, well, it wouldn't be right if it wasn't Arantxa (another "very special" opponent). But it has to be taken round by round as every opponent in draw is very very tough... Good luck, Dominique! |
![]() | 21 August - A quick statistical fact - win over Jana Nejedly was Dominique's 150th career win in Corel WTA Tour main draw action (includes Fed Cup as well) - adding ITF Challengers and WTA Tour qualification results gives much bigger number of victories, of course... |
![]() | 19 August - So, Dominique lost to Yayuk Basuki once again in straight sets 5-7 3-6... But it was very very strange match as it seemed to go so well for Dominique - she was leading in first set already 5-1 and had some setpoints, then... something happened... and she lost 10 games in a row!?!?! She found her game again at 0-4 and broke Yayuk's serve, but it was already too late - she could reach 3-5, but no more... Hopefully she can recover from this defeat and regain her great form from of Wimbledon day's for next weeks New Haven tournament and of course, for US Open! Come on, Dominique, you can do it!!! |
![]() | 19 August - Dominique will be in action again today - at 11 am local time i.e. 5 pm Central European Time (CET) she will start against Yayuk Basuki on Court 2 and Flo will meet Anke Huber on same court after Dominique has finished - hopefully with another win! Check Chris Gerby's great comments at On the Line Tennis E-zine - they are really good! After reading them it feels like you have seen those matches yourself!
![]() | 18 August - Good news from Montreal - Dominique won her first round match in very convincing way 6-4 6-2! Now she will play Yayuk Basuki tomorrow - hopefully it goes better than in Australian Open! Even better news is that Flo won her first round match against Schnyder in straight sets 6-4 6-3!!! Great! The only sad thing about yesterday is that Dominique and Flo lost their doubles match against Martinez and Tarabini - although it was in straight sets, it was very close 5-7 5-7...sad, indeed... Good news about doubles is that Dominique is ranked 32th again! And Flo 31th!
![]() | 17 August - As Venus Williams had to withdraw, the possible third round opponent for Dominique will be Monica Seles! Today Dominique will start at 1 pm local time against Jana Nejedly which will also be televised by TSN and RDS - so those who have this chance, take a look at this match. There is also possibility for others - MontrealCAM where some of the matches are shown. Well, in doubles Dominique and Flo meet the 6th seeds Martinez and Tarabini in first round. And Flo will meet 10th seed Patty Schnyder in first round of singles after getting through from qualification tournament. Check the great comments at On the Line Tennis E-zine!
![]() | 15 August - Du Maurier Open draw has been announced - Dominique is 12th seed - it shows how high level tournament it will be - Tier I, of course. Well, Dominique is in first half of the draw and in first round she will meet one of the wildcards, Jana Nejedly (for example, Monica Seles is a wildcard as well?!?), in second round she may meet "her old rival" Yayuk Basuki or qualifier (probably Elena Makarova or another wildcard Pelletier) and in third round it may be the older Williams' sister Venus, who is seeded 4th. Hopefully there won't be any early round upsets for Dominique and she will have a good tournament! There is no confirmation about doubles draw yet, but talking about Dominique's doubles partner Flo, she has to start from qualification tournament in singles (and she is 2nd seed there). Good luck!
![]() | 13 August - Well, as Dominique is not playing this week either, there are not so many
news to write about. Her singles ranking is still 12 (although Mary Pierce is only 1 point
behind) and doubles ranking is 34th. In Race to Chase Dominique is 11th and in following
table her ranking points earned in 1998 are showed.

![]() | 6 August - As you already know, Belgium lost their Fed Cup tie against Slovakia 1-4. Belgian girls lost all their singles matches - Dominique to Nagyova 4-6 3-6 and Sabine to Habsudova 2-6 6-4 5-7 in second day. The only positive result came from doubles where Dominique and Els won Husarova & Studenikova in straight sets 7-5 6-1. Better luck next year!!! Btw, either Dominique nor Sabine will play on Belgian A-Championships this year as WTA-calendar for them is so tight - Dominique will play 23 and Sabine 25 tournaments... So main candidates for title will be Justine Henin, Els Callens, Stéphanie Déville, Daphne Vandezande, Ga?lle Taton, Vickey Maes, Cindy Schuurmans and Kim Clijsters. |
