Sanosuke is a famous gangster in the underworld looking the next fight to improve him self. He dislikes the Meiji Government for what they did to the Sekihoutai 10 year ago which he was a member of. When he run into Kenshin the first time he is helping out the local restaurant to get rid of some rude customer and ask Kenshin would he like to fight him which Kenshin nicely refuses to. He is hired by a third party to kill the Hitokiri Battousai. After Fighting with Kenshin, he becomes a member of the Kenshin Gumi.
The Sekihoutai were framed as the false army of the Meiji rebel
for spreading false information about the meiji government which
were claims to reduce the tax on the farmer who support the Meiji.
In reality they were true member of the Meiji and were killed off
when the Meiji government couldn't do what they claim they could
do.
