Morality of Kung Fu

School Motto
Respect your Elders, Parents, Teachers and their teachings.

Train to be kind, honest, generous, Kung Fu.

In Chinese martial arts it is well known but maybe not understood that the success of a kung fu student is not determined by his external appearance or how strong or weak a person is, but rather by the students way of thinking and his or her morality.
In China, martial artists have a saying "A student will spend 3 years looking for a good teacher, and a teacher will test a student for 3 years". A wise student will realize it is better to spend a number of years looking for a good teacher rather than spend time training under a mediocre one.
A good SiFu will lead you to the right path and help you build a strong foundation for life and for future training.
A teacher who is not qualified and who has no depth of knowledge may teach you many bad habits. Good teachers will always set a good example for their students with their spiritual and moral virtue. Good Sifu's not only teach good Kung Fu, they teach a way of life.
Traditionally teachers spent 3 years watching and testing their students before they would decide whether or not they could entrust them with the secret of the style. Teachers needed to be sure that a student's actions were sincere and that the student was willing to accept discipline and observe proper manners. This was especially so in ancient times when martial arts were used in wars and fighting techniques were kept secret. There are two different aspects in martial art morality, one is the morality of deed the other morality of mind.

Morality of mind consists of patience, courage, perseverance, will and endurance. Traditionally only those students who had cultivated these standards or morality were considered to be worthy of being taught. Students who are not moral in their actions and deeds were not considered worthy of being taught, since they could not be trusted or given respect. These people without morality of deed may abuse the art and use their fighting skills to harm innocent people.
The Chinese consider morality of mind is for self cultivation and that we have two "minds", an "emotional mind" and a "wisdom mind". Usually when a person fails in something it is because the emotional mind has dominated the thinking. The elements in the morality of mind are THE KEYS TO TRAINING, and they lead to the stage where the "wisdom mind" can dominate. This self discipline and self cultivation should be the goal of any Kung Fu training philosophy.

The next time you read and consider the school motto perhaps you may further understand it.
