Who
is Bacchus... and who are the Brigante?
The historic
Brigante were a tribe and then a kingdom in which raiding the
lower lands was a much beloved pass time. Since the area of
the Brigante had been in what is now part of Northumbria and
Lower Scotland the targets of the raids were the Anglo Saxons
and Celts still in the area. The Brigante were Celts in a land
that the Saxons called Wales. Yes, part of Wales was in the
North of England. Remember that "Wales" is not a Celtic,
let alone Welsh, word but actually Old English for Foreigner.
Which odd since the Saxons are the ones who invaded. The last
king of the Brigante gathered a force to him of many Celts and
some Saxons to bring a great and crushing raid to low lands
that would give him much wealth. He gave many rings of gold
(currency of the time) to the warriors around him. They feasted
greatly and drank heavily then rode bravely off into the fog
of time as a smash army in a land of smashed armies. Hence,
end the effect they had on history except the fact the word
Brigand now exists to represent nasty raiders and warrior of
no honor.

The
Bacchus Brigands in Markland...
Marklandicly, the Bacchus
Brigands are a collection of Marklanders from groups that have
disbanded, those disenfranchised from existing groups or those
we pulled out of the gutters of the mundane world kicking and
screaming. We are pagan based as far as ideas and identity go
in Markland. Also Bacchus is the Romanized Dionysus, god of
insanity, gluttony, lechery, and intoxication. Hence, pagan
was a safe way to go to describe us. Some believe we are a mercenary
group like many other groups in Markland but we actually fight
for what ever side we like. So far no one has offered us the
right type of payment to buy us. We are based out of Collingswood
NJ only because the contact person and leader is living there.
In actuality most of our current membership is New Jersey with
members in Pennsylvania as well. Most of the members live within
10 miles of Collingswood of recently with central Jersey holding
the next greatest concentration.
