I have wanted to know something for a very long time -- how exactly does one express oneself through music? I hear it every now and then and each time I hear it, I wonder whether it is possible to "express oneself through music" or not. By "expressing oneself", I assume it means showing one's emotions and/or conveying one's thoughts or feelings. Hey, if that is what it means, we can actually read a person's mood by listening to the non-verbal sounds he makes? Smells like dog shit to me. I heard a beggar blowing a harmonica by the street just now and guess what I deciphered from his melodious masterpiece? Nothing, except I think I have developed ear cancer.
So to all those discerning people out there, how do you read one's feelings through one's music? Do the speed, pitch, loudness and articulation of one's music hint you? Yes? So quick, detached and high-pitched music tells you that one is jubilant and ecstatic at that moment, and slow, soft and draggy music represents sadness, whilst anger and frustration are shown through loud and harsh music? What about confusion, fear and embarrassment?
Or does the musician shows his emotions through his facial expression whilst playing music? No, it cannot be; facial expression is a form of expression through the movements of one's facial features, not through the music one plays. The way a pianist sways his body whilst his fingers dance on the keyboard? That is nonsense. You cannot read a person's emotions through limited movements like that. The only gesture which conveys emotions is the middle finger, which tells you that the giver is extremely pissed off. And an erection too, it screams "I am a horny little bastard" out loud.
I tell you what, assholes. The way a music piece is played is irrelevant to the performer's emotions. The way it is played depends solely on the way it is written to be, during a certain period few hundred years back, if we are talking about classical music here. Do not bother trying to convince me that expression of emotions through music is possible by saying "Linkin Park screams, therefore they must be furious and enraged" because you will just sound stupid. We are talking about real music here, and everyone knows that Linkin Park belongs to a genre called "noise". Sadly, I can see this genre expanding at an exponential rate.
I have come to the conclusion that you cannot express yourself through music and it is final. If you try to prove me wrong, you are wrong. So next time if you ever hear "he expresses himself effectively through music" from somebody, just say "you stink" and walk away. After you are done, go down a bottle of rat poison. You are worthless anyway.
