a1derful Story

By Jasmine Graham

The two girls giggled, as they browsed through photos of boy bands on the Internet. One was a rather stunning female with almost ebony hair and the other an unnatural brunette that was not unpretty but not outrageously beautiful, like her friend, Amber. Jasmine looked Amber up and down wistfully, something that had become quite a habit, with a touch of envy. Amber looked out of the corner of her eye and must have noticed because she spoke, shattering Jasmine's fairy tale thoughts.
"Oh come one, Jas, lighten up! We're here to have a good time. Am I right or am I right?"
Jasmine managed a fake smile and was disgusted at how weak it must have looked.
"Amber, how come you're pretty and end up with all the gorgeous guys and I never will?"
Amber rolled her eyes and shook her head, sighing at her newfound friend's sudden outburst.
"Jasmine, lighten up won't you? If you believe in yourself, you can be pretty, don't ya know? Like that song by that new band. How does it go again?"
Jasmine steadied herself for one of Amber's burst of song. Sure, she had a fantastic voice but, sometimes it was a bit much. Sure enough, she started singing.
"Said be the first to believe. Beeeelieeeveee in me baaaabyyyy..."
Jasmine couldn't help herself. She giggled and focused on the computer screen, hoping to divert Amber's wandering attention long enough before they all dropped dead from a laughing fit. She clicked one button, just one single button, and found herself gazing straight into a pair of piercing sapphire-blue eyes. Her life flashed before her in an instant. She knew this person, from somewhere. But from where she didn't know. Must have been before she got her Amnesia. Her mind flashed back to the car crash, before she lost her memory and seeing those eyes somewhere. Somewhere, she thought, so far off in the distance she couldn't quite grasp it. She heard Amber say, "Now isn't this guy drop dead gorgeous, huh? He reminds me kinda of you but in what way I don't know. Isn't that amazing? If I can remember correctly his name is Ben Adams who plays for some band or something...That's right, he comes from that band, A1 and I was just singing one of their songs, boy, am I forgetful or what, no offence to you or anything...Jasmine, what's the matter?" She added near the end, her eyes flooded with concern. Jasmine didn't really care, not paying much attention to her friend's everlasting jabber. She just couldn't bring herself to tear her gaze away from the monitor, even though it was only a picture. Amber turned off the computer screen on the spur of the moment as she saw her friend entranced and Jasmine gasped as the images racing through her mind blacked out. She reached to the air, trying to bring them back, trying to remember. Her seat fell over backwards. She heard Amber scream loudly and a door slam open elsewhere at the other end of the house but she only half registered. She drifted on the unending ocean that stretched before her. This is definitely the life, she thought, wow I'm so sleepy…

Ben woke up with a shock, remembering the dream he just had. He glanced nervously at the bed beside him in the hotel suite and he thought he saw the flicker of a girl from ancient memories past. But it turned out to be just Christian, the steady rise and fall of his chest indicating he was asleep. Ben's heart rate dropped back to normal and he shook his head. He had a rehearsal tomorrow that he didn't want to be ultra tired for. He settled back under the snug duvet and took one more look at Christian, just to be sure.

Jasmine sighed as she traipsed through the crowd. It had been a month since she had fallen unconscious and the doctor had put it down to stress. Only Jasmine knew it was more than that. She looked around the huge area. They had arrived just in time. The concert was just starting. Amber had managed to drag her here, though she would have preferred to stay at home. She took one look at Amber's face, glowing with excitement, and knew it was for the best. It was Amber's favourite band, Northern Line, in their first ever concert in New Zealand. Jasmine had only ever heard about them yesterday from overeager Amber. Amber was also extremely excited about the opening act but the only thing she would let out about it was that it was a boy band.
"Well, that narrows it down." Jasmine had grumbled.
Jasmine followed Amber right to the front of the large stadium and sat down next to her in a front row seat. Jasmine had to admit it was the best view she had ever got at any concert. The first few bars of the opening song started and Jasmine noted that it was very catchy. She started humming along and watched the dancers eagerly, wondering who sings this song. Four silhouettes were etched into the darkness and she strained, trying to focus her eyes and see the detail of their faces. A light flashed on brightly and Jasmine gasped as she realised who they were. They were A1. The person who looked oddly familiar, Ben she remembered Amber saying his name was, looked up and straight into her eyes. Jasmine could feel herself falling into her dream world again, and was puzzled. What was happening? She looked at Ben through hazy eyes, the blueness taking on a dream-like quality. His eyes widened and Jasmine noticed his tongue tripping on the well rehearsed lyrics of the song, and knew that he was feeling the same pain she know felt. Suddenly she tumbled into deep water and fainted clean away.

I opened my eyes, blinking away the sleepiness I felt. I was no longer in the wide space of the stadium. I was now in the precocious confines of a Convertible. I had a look at the diver, noticing it was Ben, and was deeply amazed at the wave of love I felt for him. He threw me a smile and I just had to sigh. It was perfect, more like a dream. I rested my head on his shoulder, feeling safe in the security of his presence. He seemed excited and I somehow knew that we were driving to the concert he was going to be performing in with the fellow members of his band. I had a realisation that my memory was perfect and precise, no more fumbling around to remember things. I glanced once more at Ben's gorgeous face but it had somehow changed, had become more twisted and was now distorted with terror. I quickly redirected my gaze to the road and saw a Nissan Bluebird curving in all directions across both lanes. The driver seemed to have lost control. The look of anguished surprise on Ben's face convinced me we were going to crash. I squeezed my eyes shut and waited for the collision.

Jasmine opened her eyes to see Ben's face hovering over her own. She smiled weakly, glancing at Amber for help. Amber was standing by, temporarily forgotten, with surprise written all over her face. Jasmine looked back at Ben as the memories Came flooding back and she started sobbing, the tears finally setting themselves free. Ben sat her up and took her into his arms, stroking her hair and holding back his own tears. Finally he gathered up the courage to say what was on his mind.
"Welcome back, sis."
