8/02/1999, Monday - Railroad Museum.
(age: 2 years, 8 months, 13 days)
On Saturday we went to the Railroad Museum. As you know, Christopher loves trains, so this was a great opportunity
to show him some real steam engines. They are so massive compared to his toys, I'm not even sure he made the connection.
But it was fun climbing up to see inside. They have the largest steam engine ever built there. It's unbelievably
huge. 1,200,000 pounds. They had a few passenger coaches opened as well. Christopher didn't like being inside those
for some reason. When we got into the first coach he immediately turned around and said "Let's get out
of here". I told him we'd get out at the other end, but when we got there it was connected to the next,
and then the next. But he didn't panic. He just didn't let us doddle along the way.
8/06/1999, Friday - Wonderful Love. Sleep Trouble. Memory Reading.
(age: 2 years, 8 months, 17 days)
On Monday the kids played over at Rachel's house (Nicole's friend) for a couple of hours. When we picked them up,
Christopher asked me to pick him up so he could get a closer look at their alarm system's motion detector (what
a boy). I did and kept holding him for a while. Without warning he planted a big wet kiss right on my lips. It
was very special because, until this week, he hasn't wanted much to do with me.
Christopher has been having trouble going to sleep lately. He has been coming out of his room with all manner of
excuses like needing more water, his blanket is crooked, he heard a sound, etc. Last night I was in the computer
room across the hall when he came bouncing across, big grin on his face saying "I'm scared, Daddy".
Yeah, sure you are!
Christopher has an amazing memory. We read to him every night. We have lots of books and also get more from the
library. He has some favorite books. When we read those sometimes he'll say "I'll read it to you."
He will then proceed to "read" the entire book nearly word for word. And these are bigger books that
are practically the entire script from a Thomas the Tank engine TV episode. Pretty amazing. He also reenacts sequences
of the TV show with his wooden train set. It's fun to watch that.
8/18/1999, Wednesday - Comforting a (pretend) Sad Daddy.
(age: 2 years, 8 months, 29 days)
The other day we were sitting in the living room. For some reason I made a sad face in response to something
that was going on. Christopher came over and gave me a big hug to make me feel better. He knew I was pretending
so after a minute he said "Daddy, make a sad face." I did and he came and gave me another hug.
He did this two more times, each time giving me a hug and even kissing my shoulder once. It was very sweet. I like
that kind of game.
8/26/1999, Thursday - School Days.
(age: 2 years, 9 months, 6 days)
Christopher started pre-school last Monday. He knows the teacher from last year (the younger class did things with
the older class), so he's comfortable with the environment. He's now going Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Here are the comments that Christopher's teacher gave his first day of school:
Happy
Cooperative
Friendly
We played outside
We had a great first day! Christopher is wonderful.
Potty Training: Christopher's potty training is going very slowly. He doesn't tell us when he has to
go. He's too busy to stop what he's doing and go potty. When we tell him it's time to go potty, he usually doesn't
have a problem with that. He just doesn't care to tell us when he needs too either. We'll keep working on it. He'll
have to train soon because he almost doesn't fit in the largest diapers.
Computer Games. Christopher really likes a virtual pet game called Catz. It's a cat that you can play
with, roll a ball to, feed, even paint it different colors and spray it with water as discipline. Christopher is
a true boy. He loves spraying the cat with water and watching it yelp. He just giggles and giggles. I'm glad it's
not a real cat.
8/30/1999, Monday - School Days. Funny Potty Training Quotes.
(age: 2 years, 9 months, 10 days)
Christopher's first week of school went very well. Tina says he comes home very happy and singing the
songs he's learned in school. He really seems to like the music.
I gave Christopher a bath last Saturday. When I rinse his hair, I usually hold up on his chin and tell him to
"Look at me". That gets him to tip his head up so I can rinse without getting water in his eyes. On Saturday
I began rinsing the back of his head without pulling up on his chin. He got a bit agitated and then pulled my hand
under his chin and said "Look at me, Daddy. Look at me". He was worried I'd get water in his eyes.
Warning, potty training story. As I've said, potty training is going slowly. One funny
thing, however, is that he loves to describe his "poopies". One time, last month, he was going with Granddad's
help and he'd say "Ooo, that was a long one". Then "I'm going to make a round one for
you". "Oops, that one was small." Other quotes include: "That one looks like
the moon." and "There's a mommy one and a daddy one."
This may be a gross topic, but I think those quotes are too funny to not write down.
