Since the earliest days of Krynn, the knowledge and wizdom of the gods has been brought to all races through the efforts of the clerics. The faces and names of these gods have been many over the centuries, their precise names, apperances, and demeanors varying from land to land and people to people. In some cases, a nation only recognizes a few gods, while elsewhere many gods are worshiped. However, despite these variances, the general philosophies, laws, and powers of the gods have remained constant and recognizable. And so it is that the history of the gods that is known to man depends greatly upon the culture in which the god is recognized. Here, however, are descriptions of the gods as they are known to the Knights of Solanmia. Twenty-one is the number of Krynn's gods, allied seven on each side of the triangle of good, evil, and neutrality, and presented as three seperate families.
The first family is that of Good. It consists of Paladine, Mishakal his companion and advisor, their twin sons Kiri-Jolith and Habakuk who administer to their own orders of the world, their third son Solinari who left the circle of the family as keeper of the magic, and the other two gods of good, Majere and Branchala, who were adopted into the family from Beyond.
The second family is that of Neutrality, and is Gilean's. He has no known companion, and holds a patriarchal position in the family. Zivilyn and Chizlev are companions, as well as Sirrion and Shinare. Both were united before the coming from Beyond. Lunitari is the daughter of Zivilyn and Chislev. Reorx came from Beyond alone, to be adopted into the family of neutrals.
The final family, the family of Evil, is that of Takhisis. Consort to Sargonnas, her daughter is Ziboim and her son is Nuitari. Morgion, Chemosh, and Hiddukel were adopted into the family when they were called into this univers by Takhisis, from Beyond. It has been rumored that Paladine, Gilean, and Takhisis are siblings.
Though these gods take an active and impassioned interest in Krynn, they generally allow man's destiny to be shaped by the free will of mankind, prefering to let their will and power be felt through their agents, rather than through direct intervention.
However, several notable occasions have occured in which the gods took a direct hand in the course of the world of Krynn.
The Father of Good and Master of the Law, Paladine is the spokesman for the gods of good. A supreme leader, he choses not to interfere with the affairs of his fellows as long as their doings to not counter the law of good. It was Paladine, during the age of Twilight, who led the gods of good from Beyond at the direction of the Highgod, to create this place and time. He led the gods of good in the All-Saints War and represented his order to the other orders of the gods, for he knew better than his brothers the need for balance and the interdependence of the three major orders of the gods. Paladine's constellation, that of the Platinum Dragon, traditionally guards the Gate of Souls, keeping the dragons from returning to Krynn, and it is of no small historic interest that his constellation disappeared at the time of the Cataclysm and that the dragons reentered the world soon afterward. The Gate of Souls no longer holds what Paladine described as the Balance of the World. During the time of the Cataclysm, he and his fellow gods withdrew their direct influence from the world and caused the Cataclysm. It is recorded that for 60 days after the Cataclysm, Paladine's tears filled the nighe sky with their brilliance. Whan the time came to reclaim Krynn in the name of good, Paladine took on the form of a befuddled old wizard named Fizban the Fabulous, who wandered the world to "prod those who could change the destiny of the world." Though Paladine often intervened in seemingly minor matters, he never directly used his powers in affairs of great consequence. He worked through men and their free agency to accomplish his desires.
The Platinum Dragon
When Paladine takes on the form of the Platinum dragon, he is truely impressive. Over 72 feet long, the Platinum Dragon can attack with teeth and claws or one of his breath weapons. These include a blast of cold that can freeze enemies, a cloud vapor that turns victims into a gaseous form, and a sonic vibration that disintegrates solid rock. Highly skilled in magic, Paladine can also cast clerical spells.
Fizban appears as a befuddled grey-bearded old wizard in mouse-colored robes, with a beat-up, pointed wizard's hat that he can never seam to find. (In these instances, it's usually on his head.) He carries a plain wooden staff that appears to do nothing whatsoever, and a shabby spell book in which he can never find the spell he is searching for. Pouches hang from his belt, but they are just as likely to contain his dirty docks as spell components. Fizban can often be found with the senile gold dragon Pyrite, who believes that he's going off to save Huma.
The fabled goddess of healing is (or at least was) known in almost every culture on the face of Krynn. In ancient times, she was the most revered of the ministering gods many temples were built for the teaching of the healing arts in her name. Recently, Mishakal has become known as the Bearer or Light Bringer, as it was through her that the knowledge of the true gods was restored to the world. Mishakal is Paladine's companion and advisor. They have twin sons and a third, Solinari. After the War of the Lance, clerics of Mishakal's order were most numerous of all clerics, as nearly every comminty on Ansalon had a cleric of this order to tend to the needs of the people.
The favored god of monks, Majere is said to give his followers symbols that, when cast upon the gound, become insects that fight for their owner. A god from Beyond, Majere followed his friend Paladine into the adventure of creation.
The war god of good, Kiri-Jolith is the favorite god of paladins and good-aligned fighters. His constellation (see consellation map above) seams to threaten that of the Queen of Darkness. Son of Paladine and Mishakal and twin to Habbakuk, Kiri-Jolith is his father's peer in ability. These twins, along with Paladine, form an alliance that supports the Knights of Solamnia. Each of the orders of the Knights was established around one of these three gods. Though clerics of Kiri-Jolith are powerful in ballte, they must use their powers carefully, for they will be lost if Kiri-Jolith feels they have violated the principals of good.
Habbakuk is the god of animal life and the sea. He holds a special place in the hearts of sailors and rangers. His skills of the wild and belief in the harmony with nature constitute a peaceful teaching. Seen as a symbol of eternal life beyond the world and a strong enforcer of natural justice, he is the twin brother of Kiri-Jolith.
Befor the world was created, Branchala was a friend of Habbakuk. He followed his friend so that he, too, could help forge worlds. His music is that of the souls of all who live, and no one who has ever heard his melodies can ever remember the depths of feeling they brought into mind. It is said that his music resides in everyone, and all hearts beat to its melody.
The third son of Paladine is the master of good magic. He spins through the sky over the world and keeps his watchful eye on all magic. The story of Solinari is given in further detail on the magic page.
The patriarch of the neutral family of the gods holds a book, the Tobril, that contains all the knowledge possessed by all of the gods. Though all truths are contained in that single tome, some portions of it are sealed. Seaming to hold Paladine and the Queen of Darkness in their places to keep them from destroying each other, the constellation of Gilean resides in the night sky between these constellations. The true home of Gilean is believed to be the Hidden Vale, a perfect valley of nature that exists everywhere, and yet nowhere. The ways to the vale are sometimes opened to those who follow Gilean's example.
The hand by which all of chaos was brought under the direction of the gods in place and time, Reorx commands creation and technology. Though humans often portray Reorx as a paunchy squire to Kiri-Jolith, dwarves and gnomes revere him as the highest of the gods. Reorx forged the Greystone of Gargath, and is thus the father of gnomes, dwarves, and kender. Reorx can be seen as somewhat naive, as it was he who was tricked into forging the Greygem.
Sirrion is the god of flame and natural power. He guards the neutral way, and the bringer into being of nature. His companion, Shinare, is the goddess of industry and creation from nature; thus they are traditionally seen as a quarrelsome couple, and their disputes are of gigantic proportions.
Shinare is the goddess of wealth, money, and industry. The favorite god of the dwarves, Shinare is the patron god of merchants and commerce. Her companion Sirrion's fondness for nature often disputes Shinare's desire for progress.
Chislev is the companion of Zivilyn. She is nature incarnate, and is served by many animated wooden creatures who carry out her wishes. She and her companion are said to dwell in Zhan, the grandest of forests, and it is said that worthy elves come here when they leave Krynn. She was fooled by Hiddukel when she convinced Reorx to forge the Greygem, which nearly caused the destruction of the gods themselves.
Said to exist in all times and all places, and to possess all the wisdom of all the planes of existance, Zivilyn is the advisor to Gilean. His relationship with his companion, Chislev, is seen as the ideal blend of harmony and understanding.
The daughter of Gilean, Lunitari is the god of nutral magic. Her mother is not know. See magic page for more on the gods of magic.
Going by the names of Takhisis, the Queen of Darkness, Dragonqueen, She of Many Faces.... Takhisis is, in all lands and cultures, the visage of evil. It was Takhisis who led the shadows from Beyond, and broght them to aid in the creation of this cosmos. In her view, it is right and just that she rule over all creation, and so this is her constant struggle. She and her consort, Sargonnas, have one child, Nuitari, their evil son of dark magic. Though there is a respectful peace between Takhisis and Sargonnas, they do not hesitate to use their powers to better their relative positions. It was the Dark Queen who instigated the All-Saints War, before the beginning of Krynn, and she was primarily responsible for the separation of the gods at this time. Seeing the spirits of mortals that fell to Krynn as her key to ultimate victory over the other gods, Takhisis has moved throughout the centuries to take control of the world through the power of her minions. All three of the Dragon Wars were instigated for her betterment. This continued until Huma, using the dragonlance, drove Takhisis from the face of Krynn, banishing her to the Abyss. All of the Dragons were also banished deep into the ground from whence they had come, and so soon passed into legend. Then, the pride of the Kingpriest supplied Takhisis with new opportunities for her ambitions. She had been brooding over her plans for conquest in the Abyss for nealy 1000 years, and as the Kingpriest and his nation fell into pride and boasting, the path was was clear for her cunning suggestions. And so came the Cataclysm, causing creat destrucion in the world of Krynn. However, it did not destroy the Temple of the Kingpriest. Instead, the Temple was sent to the Abyss, where it was soon discovered by the Dark Queen. As a result, she was able to gain hold in the world of Krynn, and the result was the War of the Lance, further explained on the history page. Two of Takhisis' most common forms are the Five-Headed Dragon and the Dark Temptress. Do not underestimate her in either form.
When Takhisis is in the form of the Five-Headed Chromatic Dragon, she is over sixty feet long and has, obvously, five heads. Each of the heads has its own color; white, green, blue, red, and black; and its own power and personality. Due to this, she can attack with all five heads at once, breathing frost, poison gas, lightning, fire, and acid, in accordance to the head. Each head is also capable of casting its own magical spells, with no regard to what the other heads are doing.
When Takhisis is in the form of the most beautiful and alluring of women, she can easily gain the attention and trust of any man, and can subsequently bring them under her control.
The god of vengeance is consort to the Queen of Darkness. He often participates in plots for and against his Queen. Sargonnas is the favored god of the minotaur, and he despises all other races for being "weak and pathetic".The god of disease, decay, and plague, Morgion is always the lone warrior, not acting or discussing with the other gods unless it is necessary. He broods in his Bronze Tower, standing on the far borders of the Abyss, keeping his thoughts secret from all, except for his minions. Secrative, Morgion's worshippers and priestcrafts are conducted in secret, dark places, and non outside their orders know their works fully.
The Lord of the Undead, Chemosh was called from the Beyond, after he was cast from it. Takhisis rescued him from the Void of Chaos, for she saw his potential usefulness in his scheme. The lord of false redemption, Chemosh offers immortality at the price of exaltation. His followers hope to live forever, but will do so in bodies eternally corrupted. Almost all of the undead at one time made a pact with Chemosh.
The daughter of Takhisis, the Sea Gueen is impetuous, depressive, and constantly experiencing extreem emotions. She is the most temperamental of the gods, and the most dangerous to deal with. The queen of tempests and weather, seamen who attempt to placate her may avoid her rage, but more often, they will manage to displease her somehow. Zeboim is the mother of Ariakan, son of Ariakus.A deal maker who trades in souls, it is said that Hiddukel is the only being to barter with Takhisis and come out ahead. He controls all ill-gotten wealth in the world, and uses it to corrupt gready men. Seen as grossly fat with an oily smile, he is also a mischief maker of sorts.
Twin brother of Zeboim and son of Takhisis and Sarggonas, Nuitari left the ranks of evil to join the other gods of magic. See magic page for more on the gods of magic.
